A concept art image from Legendary’s adaptation for Jordan Vogt-Roberts Gundam has been revealed. Gundam is based on the famous Japanese anime created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise in 1979, which has spawned a revolution of TV shows, films, books, Manga, video games and massively popular model kits of the Gundam suits. Gundam are, essentially, robotic military suits, called mecha. They are piloted by humans, similar to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, for audiences unfamiliar with the origins of the genre.

Vogt-Roberts began his directed career with the coming-of-age comedy The Kings of Summer with Nick Robinson, then moved on to more big-budget fare, taking on Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson. From there, Vogt-Roberts signed on to both the live-action adaptation of Gundam, as well as an adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, the popular video game series, which is set to star Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake.

Netflix and Legendary have now revealed a peek at the concept art for Gundam, featuring a the famous RX-78-2 Gundam Suit, surrounded by flames and looking ready for action. While the image is a source-accurate look at the Gundam suit, it’s not much to go on in terms of what type of film Gundam is going to be. Vogt-Roberts said in the past that he wanted it to be an accessible point for the franchise, which would allow audiences new to Gundam to catch up and become invested, opening the doors for more exploration into the 40 decades worth of Gundam-related material. The film is being scripted by Saga and Y: The Last Man author Bryan K. Vaughn, which should make for a compelling sci-fi adventure given his prior credits.

The Gundam suit’s most famous North American appearance is probably Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One in 2018. In that film, Daito takes on the form of Mobile Suit Gundam to help defeat Ben Mendelsohn’s MechaGodzilla, showing off a highly-polished live-action version of the suit in action. It’s an ‘Easter Egg’ style scene, but one that fans were quick to cheer for, and likely a helpful catalyst in getting the live-action Gundam movie greenlit.

Little is known about Vaughn and Vogt-Roberts’ approach to Gundam overall, nor has it been revealed who the movie’s cast may be. Presumably, it would be a group of young actors to inhabit the roles of the Newtypes, genetically-engineered humans, made to control the suits. Vogt-Roberts was quoted as saying, “…I want to create this film and give them an access point where you can say, ‘This is where you start. This is your entry point.” An origin story would certainly make sense in order to entice new viewers and with live-action anime starting to make a push on the platform (see: this month’s Cowboy Bebop), it could very well become a new home for that type of entertainment, be it for dyed-in-the-wool Gundam fans or newcomers.
