Gunslinger Spawn from Image Comics is set to be one of the biggest character debuts in recent years. Earlier this year, Todd McFarlane debuted King Spawn, the first entry in a new shared universe built around Spawn. The book proved to be a massive hit with fans and retailers, and McFarlane is building on that momentum in the brand-new Gunslinger Spawn.

Todd McFarlane, along with Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and other prominent Marvel artists, left the company in late 1991 to form Image Comics. Spawn was McFarlane’s offering, appearing in early 1992 to high sales if not critical acclaim. Spawn is still being published and holds the record for the longest-running independent title. In early 2021, Todd McFarlane announced plans to create a new, shared universe built around Spawn and his supporting characters. The first offering, Spawn Universe #1, debuted in June to high sales; the next book, King Spawn #1, premiered in August, selling nearly a half-million copies, making it one of the best-selling single issues in recent memory. This October, Todd McFarlane unleashes Gunslinger Spawn #1, which promises to be even bigger.

A press release from Image breaks down the book’s concept as well as its various variant covers. McFarlane was quoted as saying that the book “will make Spawn look like a Boy Scout.” The character originates in America’s Old West but finds himself thrown 200 years into the future—the 21st century. Now, he must find his way in this strange world and confront the “demons of his past.” Gunslinger Spawn will feature a primary story written by McFarlane with art by Brett Booth; additional art will be provided by Phillip Tan, Kevin Keane and Thomas Nalchik. In addition, McFarlane will write Gunslinger Spawn’s backup stories, featuring art by Ales Kot. Gunslinger Spawn will also feature a variety of variant covers by superstars such as John Romita Jr, Robert Kirkman, Greg Capullo, TonTon Revolver and McFarlane.

Todd McFarlane’s decision to expand the Spawn universe comes as the character nears his 30th anniversary. In that time, he has built up a rich mythos and a huge supporting cast; there have been other Spawns throughout the ages as well, providing a rich vein of material for McFarlane, Booth and others to explore. The franchise has also expanded with a fan-favorite animated series and live-action film. A live-action reboot film is reported to be in active development.

Fans have responded as well, helping King Spawn shatter sales records. The anticipation for Gunslinger Spawn is even higher and is on track to be one of the biggest character debuts of the past 30 years for any publisher, including Marvel and DC, according to Image Comics. Gunslinger Spawn will go on sale October 28. The next Spawn title, The Scorched, will premiere in December.
