A new theory suggests that King Ghidorah’s original plan in the MonsterVerse was rooted in Godzilla vs. Kong’s hidden Hollow Earth world. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it was discovered by Monarch that the three-headed Titan is most likely an alien invader who traveled to Earth from a distant planet thousands of years ago. Sometime after his arrival, he was defeated and left for dead by Godzilla in Antarctica.

Ghidorah’s alien nature makes sense of his malevolent behavior and motives in King of the Monsters. As explained by the characters in the film, Ghidorah isn’t part of Earth’s natural order. That seems to be the reason why he doesn’t follow the paths of Titans like Mothra, Godzilla, or Behemoth, whose interests are in protecting the balance of nature. Being an outsider who doesn’t care about these things, Ghidorah turned out to be a wild card in Emma and Jonah’s plan to rejuvenate the Earth’s ecosystems. Instead of helping to save the world as they intended, Ghidorah woke up over a dozen sleeping Titans and proceeded to terraform the planet in his image.

It’s possible that terraforming the Earth is what he was in the process of doing when he fought Godzilla for the first time over a millennia before, but one fan has theorized Ghidorah was actually trying to steal the secret Hollow Earth energy source that APEX used to power Mechagodzilla [via Reddit]. The idea is derived from a reveal in the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization, where it’s proposed that Antarctica being the site of a Hollow Earth entry point and the location of Ghidorah’s frozen body is not a coincidence. The characters don’t know the details, but they believe that Ghidorah may have been leaving or entering Antarctica’s Hollow Earth tunnel when Godzilla intercepted him.

The theory postulates that Ghidorah was headed into the Hollow Earth so he could make himself more powerful. Understanding his intentions, Godzilla (and possibly other Titans) took him down to stop him from succeeding. It could be that Monster Zero came to Earth for this purpose, having detected the scope of its power from outer space. This does sound like a scenario that might have happened, given what’s known about the creature’s capabilities. Ghidorah growing stronger from biting the electrical grid during the final battle in Boston proves he possesses an energy absorption ability. In fact, it was because of this power he almost beat Godzilla.

If Ghidorah had used this ability deep within the Hollow Earth, it could have granted him so much power that he’d be unbeatable. He may not have gotten what he desired thousands of years ago, but he may have accomplished his goal posthumously in Godzilla vs. Kong. Many have interpreted Mechagodzilla breaking away from APEX’s control as a sign that Ghidorah’s mind took him over. If Mechagodzilla was in truth a resurrected Ghidorah, that would mean that for a short time, Godzilla’s worst enemy did have access to the same power that runs through his veins.
