It’s still a little strange that we’re in 2020 and a new Half-Life game is coming out. The wait between Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Alyx has been almost two decades, but Valve is finally continuing the story. Well, continue is inaccurate since this is a prequel, but that’s not that point! Half-Life!

Just the other day, Valve released a trio of gameplay trailers that show off different areas from Alyx. It’s our first real look at the gameplay beyond what Valve revealed earlier in the year. The biggest takeaway is the various different ways you’ll be able to control Alyx when the game comes out. Supporting basically all major VR headsets currently available, not everyone will have joysticks to play like a more traditional FPS.

Teleporting will never not be weird, but the general motion is pretty smooth. I’m more partial to just actually walking, but I really enjoy how leaning works. VR is perfect for adding some extra tactical depth to FPS games and it helps bring things in line with immersive sims. Just being able to cautious check corners instead of sprinting full blast into rooms is awesome.

You can find the other videos over on Valve’s YouTube channel, but Alyx is shaping up to be the real deal. It just looks like a super solid shooter that may finally legitimize VR as a gaming staple. I wouldn’t expect every developer to jump ship as traditional games still serve a purpose, but Alyx is mighty impressive.

Whether or not the campaign can sustain that momentum is the real question. The VR tech may be a proof of concept, but if the game is just kind of bland, then what’s the point? We can already experience Half-Life and it’s not like Alyx is rewriting the playbook on level design. This looks very much like Half-Life 2 featuring improved graphics.

Still, this is all speculation until we actually get our hands on anything. With only three weeks left until release, Half-Life: Alyx will be here soon enough. Now we’ll just need to figure out how to juggle Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons so we can try it out.
