Rob Zombie’s Halloween took John Carpenter’s story and made it his own, and when it was time to decide who was going to play Laurie Strode, he had a couple of names to choose from. In 1978, Carpenter introduced the world to a new serial killer in Halloween, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, and Nick Castle. Halloween was followed by 12 films, with retcons and remakes among them.

Although the Halloween timeline has been retconned a couple of times, the original film has only been remade once, and it was back in 2007, with Rob Zombie as director. Also titled Halloween, the film took the premise of the original but with various changes. The movie, then, follows Michael Myers, who after killing his sister when he was 10-years-old, was sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium. Fifteen years later, Michael escaped and returned to his hometown, Haddonfield, where he began stalking Laurie Strode and her friends. Zombie’s movie focused more on Michael’s time at Smith’s Grove, so viewers could better understand why he is the way he is.

Of course, what didn’t change was Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) being Michael’s main target, who just like in the original Halloween II, was revealed to be his sister in the sequel. Taylor-Compton reprised her role as Laurie in Zombie’s Halloween II, but before she was cast in the role originally played by Jamie Lee Curtis, there were other actresses also interested in it.

Halloween 2007: Emma Stone Auditioned To Play Laurie Strode

Laurie Strode has become an icon in the horror genre and one of the most beloved “final girls”, so it’s not surprising that when the remake was in development, many actresses were interested in playing the role. Emma Stone was one of them, and she auditioned for it, but ultimately didn’t get it. Back in 2006, when Halloween was in development, Emma Stone had only appeared in minor roles in TV shows, among those The New Patridge Family, Medium, and Malcolm in the Middle. Had she gotten the role of Laurie Strode, it would have been her first big-screen role, but her cinematic debut arrived the same year Halloween was released thanks to the comedy Superbad.

Another actress who auditioned to play Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie’s Halloween is Danielle Panabaker. By then, Panabaker had already appeared in a number of TV projects, among those some Disney Channel Original Movies, such as Stuck in the Suburbs and Read It and Weep. On the big-screen, Panabaker starred in Disney’s Sky High and the family comedy Yours, Mine & Ours, so Halloween would have been her first horror movie. Two years later, Panabaker got the lead role in the Friday the 13th remake – and, funny enough, Scout Taylor-Compton auditioned for that role. Panabaker later starred in Piranha 3DD, the sequel to the 2010 film Piranha 3D.

Rob Zombie’s original plan for Halloween was for Danielle Harris to play Laurie and Sheri Moon Zombie to play Lynda, but they ended up playing Annie Brackett and Deborah Myers, respectively. Danielle Harris playing Laurie would have been pretty significant within the Halloween universe, as she played Laurie’s daughter, Jamie Lloyd, in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. Halloween wasn’t Scout Taylor-Compton’s first movie, but it was the one that made her a widely-known name. Although she’s still active, she has stayed away from franchises and blockbusters, though not too far from horror movies and thrillers.
