After a small teaser yesterday, 343 Industries has released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary on PC. Available right this second, you can download the game from Steam, the Microsoft Store, or via Game Pass for PC. A very nostalgic trailer accompanied the shadow drop that sets up the story for returning veterans and noobies alike.

In a weird twist, I kind of don’t like the original Halo. It was a very pivotal shooter for the Xbox back in 2001, but its design hasn’t held up well. The guns are all great and the AI for Covenant forces is excellent, but the campaign levels suffer as the game goes on. The Flood is also something I hope I’ll never see again.

Still, you can’t beat the price of free if you’re a Game Pass subscriber. You’ll be getting a full 10-level campaign, online co-op support, brand new multiplayer levels, and just more Halo. Cross-play between PC and Xbox One will also come in a future update, so that’s even more reason to get excited.

As for what this PC version will bring to the table, players can expect ultra-widescreen support, an FOV slider, uncapped framerates, and support for mouse and keyboard (which should be pretty obvious). This will be much the same as Reach’s port, so expect the framerate limiter and FOV slider to be a little iffy at the moment.

Still, that shouldn’t stop people from playing this. 343 Industries will be continuously updating each game as newer releases come, so you can use these features at your discretion. On a Gsync or Freesync compatible monitor, the weird frame pacing issues aren’t even a thing. The game just runs wonderfully at 240 FPS.

What’s more exciting is that Halo’s multiplayer will finally be back in action. The original game still has the most pure multiplayer experience in the series, so it’ll be cool to take a step back 20 years. Reach is fine, but give me something where pure skill is the determining factor in a win. That’s way more my speed and might even get me to start wasting time online again.
