With Halo Infinite having finally launched for multiple Xbox platforms and PC, fans of the Halo franchise are eagerly awaiting the return of familiar faces. One in particular has a distinctive appearance that isn’t detailed in-game, but rather in supplemental material. In the Halo Graphic Novel, the first comic released for the franchise in 2006, fans get an up-close (and rather gory) look at the fate of ‘Rtas Vadum, otherwise known as Half-Jaw.

‘Rtas Vadum first appeared in Halo 2 (he was known as ‘Rtas Vadumee in that game, the suffix denoting a member of the Covenant military for his species) as a stalwart ally of the Arbiter, though not by choice. Shamed after failing to protect the first Halo ring, the Arbiter (played by voice actor Keith David) was granted his rank by the Prophets with the expectation that he would die on a perilous and suicidal mission. Vadumee outright states that the Arbiter’s life doesn’t mean anything to him when compared to the lives of the Elites under his direct command. Outside of Vadumee’s attitude, the character is best remembered for missing two mandibles on his left side of his face.

In the beginning of the Halo Graphic Novel, ‘Rtas Vadumee maintains all his mandibles, but not for long. When ordered to a Flood-invested ship to rescue a minor Prophet, Vadumee loses a member of his team to the monstrous infection forms. Vadumee and Subcommander Kusovai duel with their Energy Swords, and Kusovai slices the left side of Vadumee’s face – along with two of his mandibles.

In the original Halo: Combat Evolved, the deeper motivations behind the Covenant took a backseat to gameplay and a Human-centric storyline. It wasn’t until Halo 2 that the story was expanded to include the Covenant point of view, including a playable Elite and adding fellow Elites as teammates. ‘Rtas Vadum, with his distinct appearance and friendship with the Arbiter, quickly won over the fans – even as they derided Arbiter-centric levels (he was left out of all advertising at the time, and fans believed the entire game would be centered around Master Chief, the main protagonist from the previous game).

‘Rtas Vadum’s story in the games doesn’t go far beyond Halo 3, where he becomes a Shipmaster of an Assault Carrier. But the comics and other supplemental material in the Halo Universe does a great deal of expanding the lore, for both Covenant and Human characters. No word yet on whether Half-Jaw is included in Halo Infinite, but with the game’s rumored 10-year plan, perhaps the fan-favorite Elite will appear in future updates.
