Anyone with a list of potential final fighters coming to Smash Ultimate can officially cross off Master Chief’s name. Sorry, Halo fans.

Today’s the day. The day that the biggest roster in Super Smash Bros. history gets its final piece. Almost two years after it first launched, Smash Ultimate will get its final fighter later today. The DLC has brought players a number of highs and lows over the course of the past two years, and this will be the final time you can argue over who exactly the next fighter is going to be.

The same names as always have been doing the rounds on social media ever since the character announcement was confirmed during last month’s Nintendo Direct. Waluigi, Sora, and Crash Bandicoot all high on many people’s Smash Bros. wishlists. If Halo’s Master Chief is also up there for you, we’re afraid we’ve got some bad news.

A tweet asking who the final Smash character will be if they were from the last game you played has gone somewhat viral. So much so that it caught the eye of Halo community manager John Junyszek who decided to use it to break some news. Junyszek quoted the tweet and wrote “maybe one day”, adding it’s “not happening” via a reply.

Now, Halo fans reading this right now might be clinging onto the hope that Junyszek makes no mention of Halo. Perhaps the last game he played was completely unrelated to Master Chief. Well, for one thing, he wouldn’t know if a character from a game unrelated to Halo was or wasn’t about to be added to Smash. The community manager also goes into a little more detail about how crossovers happen in another reply.

“With cool partnerships like these, both teams (us and them) work closely to ensure the crossovers fit naturally within their universe,” Junyszek tweeted. The response was in reply to a fan who asked whether he would even know if Master Chief was coming to Smash later today. All of the above seems to confirm that Halo will not be coming to Smash Ultimate later today. Only a few more hours until we stop finding out who it isn’t and get confirmation of who it is.
