As revealed Xbox’s Gamescom 2021 showcase, Halo Infinite has finally been given a solid release date of December 8. Microsoft and 343 Industries have been hesitant to commit to a launch date for Halo Infinite for quite some time. The game was initially meant to release in 2020 alongside the Xbox Series X/S, but the team made a decision to delay the game by a year to address some feedback over its visuals. In the extra year, it seems Halo Infinite has come a long way, but some sacrifices still had to be made along the way.

It was recently announced that Halo Infinite is delaying co-op and Forge, two of the main staples of a Halo game. Although Forge didn’t arrive in the franchise until Halo 3, campaign co-op is deeply rooted in the DNA of the series. This will mark the first game in the mainline series to launch without the ability to play through its story with friends, which has disappointed many who didn’t plan to explore Zeta Halo’s semi-open world alone when the title releases. As of right now, 343 plans to add co-op alongside Halo Infinite’s second season of post-launch content and Forge in the third, though there are no concrete dates for either of those yet.

As revealed at Gamescom 2021, Halo Infinite will release on December 8, 2021, a few weeks after the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Leaks previously suggested a Halo Infinite November release, but this is the first time 343 and Xbox have given the game a date since 2020. It will provide ample room for Xbox’s other big holiday title, Forza Horizon 5, to launch on November 5 – which is also the same day Call of Duty: Vanguard launches. Battlefield 2042 will also release on October 22, so this new release date for Halo Infinite puts a bit of distance between it and its biggest competitors.

This will also grant Xbox the time to market some holiday bundles and accessories for Halo Infinite, as it’ll release right before the holidays begin. The entire story of Halo Infinite has already leaked online, so fans will have to be wary of spoilers for a while. However, with luck, the collective internet will be kind enough not to openly discuss the game’s plot online. Either way, fans can likely breath a sigh of relief knowing Xbox and 343 are have completely committed to a 2021 release.

There was some concern that Xbox would push the game once more into 2022, but it seems the team is confident in the game to release it this year, even with missing features. Although there may still be some more games planning to announce holiday release dates, Halo Infinite seems to cement itself as one of the last big titles in the holiday 2021 line-up.
