343 dropped the biggest surprise of 2021 this week by launching Halo Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer with almost no warning. RIP to those of us who have to set gaming time aside well in advance. Turns out that probably wasn’t many people, as within a few hours of launching on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, Infinite had amassed more than 250,000 concurrent players on Steam alone according to SteamDB.

The number was growing so quickly as more and more people learned Halo Infinite had launched that it was hard to keep track of in real-time. Tweets about the number seem to suggest it had hit 100,000 players within Infinite’s first hour. Daniel Ahmad confirmed it had peaked at 162,000 within two and a half hours. That’s a new record for an Xbox game on Steam, doubling Forza Horizon’s 5’s peak concurrent player count.

At some point during Infinite’s opening night, it was being played by 272,586 people on Steam at the same time. Not only does that further solidify its spot as Xbox’s record holder in that regard, but it places it 22nd overall when it comes to games with the highest concurrent player counts. That’s more people playing at the same time than games like Fall Guys, Warframe, and Rust have ever managed to amass.

It should be highlighted once more at this point that this is within hours of Infinite’s launch. A launch that wasn’t announced ahead of time. Plus, it was on a Monday night. All of that likely means Infinite’s concurrent player record is only going to grow in the coming days. It will be interesting to see what number the game manages to achieve during its first weekend. Its current record is only 15,000 players short of Skyrim’s, and 20,000 away from Destiny 2.

All of the numbers above are just on Steam too. There’s currently no data revealing how many people played Infinite on Xbox last night. Considering more than five million people had played Forza Horzion 5 shortly after its full launch, it’s probably not a stretch to assume Infinite did a similar number, if not a little higher.
