Acer’s Halo is the latest smart speaker to hit the market with the Google Assistant voice assistant built in. These voice-activated speakers have quickly risen in popularity, thanks to the simple fact of being able to play music or podcasts through good-sounding speakers just by using one’s voice. Several brands have had success with this style, and Acer is the latest to add another option to the market.

Acer’s announcement came at quite an interesting time, considering Google just released its own latest line of smart speakers earlier this month under the Nest brand. With the new Halo speaker also coming equipped with the Google Assistant built in, the question now becomes which of these newer additions to the smart speaker market is the better buy?

The two products are separated by just $10 – the Google Nest Audio costs $99, and the Acer Halo is slightly more expensive at $109. However, despite how close these products are in price, they have several distinct differences when it comes to the design, sound quality, and the smart features. To find out exactly which of these speakers is the right one to buy, it’s worth reviewing what makes each product unique.

Design, Sound Quality, & Smart Features

The Acer Halo has a cylindrical, mesh-covered design, with both a RGB base and a LED display to help make it stand out. The display helps convey different information, while the RGB base is designed to illuminate with multiple effects and patterns that are customizable by the user. The Nest Audio, meanwhile, has a slimmer portfolio with five different colors to choose from: charcoal, chalk, sand, sage, and sky. Google also notes that the Nest Audio is designed for sustainability, since it is made from 70-percent recycled plastic.

One of the more interesting aspects of the Acer Halo is the fact that it is compatible with DTS sound, which is implemented to allow speakers to output 360-degree audio. At the same time, it’s possible to pair two Nest Audio speakers together for stereo sound, or to chain multiple Nest Audio devices together to create a whole home audio experience. Both products have Google Assistant built in, of course, although the Nest Audio may have more smart home compatibility, thanks to Google having several other products in the smart home arena. With the Google Home app, it will likely be easy to establish communication between those devices.

The decision between these two smart speakers really comes down to what matters more to the individual. Those who prefer high-quality audio driven by DTS sound, then it might be worth spending a few more dollars on the Acer Halo. However, if seamless integration into an existing smart home is more desirable, then Google’s Nest Audio is likely to be the safer bet.
