HarmonQuest season 3 episode 1 found its ragtag group of adventurers heading to Goblopolis. Early in his career Dan Harmon created shows like Computerman and wrote cult pilot Heat Vision And Jack, a Knight Rider parody starring Jack Black. Harmon made a name for himself with NBC comedy Community, which debuted in 2009. The show featured a great cast, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Chevy Chase and Donald Glover (Solo: A Star Ways Story), and established Harmon’s style of constant gags and meta-humor that usually combined with an emotional payoff at the end of any given episode.
Community managed to fulfill its the TV side of its “six seasons and a movie” mantra, but a film version didn’t happen and probably won’t at this point. Dan Harmon other major claim to fame is as co-creator of Adult Swim’s Rick And Morty. This animated sci-fi comedy follows the intergalactic adventures of the title duo, and the show quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The first half of Rick And Morty season 4 aired in late 2019, while the second half is due to arrive in 2020.
Even a cursory glance at Dan Harmon’s work reveals him to be a major pop culture nerd, with Rick And Morty heavily inspired by both Back To The Future and Doctor Who. Harmon also hosted podcast Harmontown, and a segment on this show where he and some guests played a role-playing game inspired the creation of HarmonQuest. This series combines live-action which features Harmon, his co-hosts and celebrity guests like Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Endgame) playing an RPG, while the adventure itself is animated. HarmonQuest season 3 episode 1 “Goblopolis Lost” takes place two years after the bleak ending of the previous series.
To recap, HarmonQuest season 2’s finale “The Sorcerer Of The Storm” ended with Dan Harmon’s half-orc ranger Fondue dead and now in spirit form, while the gang’s defeat of sorcerer Celty caused the Demon Realm to merge with the Material Plane – which was bad. HarmonQuest season 3 episode 1 picks up with Boneweevil (Jeff B. Davis) and Beor (Erin McGathy, Drunk History) still questing, while Fondue’s spirit is trapped in a sword. The gang head to goblin city Goblopolis to face the evil Puppet King. Their first attempt to infiltrate the city doesn’t go well, as they get overwhelmed by attacking forces and have to be saved by a mysterious hooded figure. They also have to time recovering Fondue’s spirit sword, which was lost in the attack.
HarmonQuest season 3 episode 1 end with the gang defeating the Puppet King, only for Beor to learn the hooded figure is her brother Lymric, who wants to bring her home to help save their people. All in all, it was a solid episode of HarmonQuest and set the stage neatly for the rest of season 3.
