Fans have shared their photos of Harrison Ford and Mads Mikkelsen in and around Newcastle as filming commences on the long-awaited Indiana Jones 5. Ford made his debut in the role of the archeologist and adventurer in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark and has carried the role in all the subsequent films, including the upcoming installment. Much like his role as Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, Indiana has been one of Ford’s biggest claims to fame and one of his frequent collaborations with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
Attempts at getting a fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise off the ground have been in the works since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but stalled frequently due to a struggle to find the right story followed by Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. Following numerous false reports of recasting the character with a younger actor, including Chris Pratt, and moving forward with Shia LaBeouf’s character Mutt taking over, development finally got going again in 2016 with Ford confirmed to return. The film would still see some speed bumps in getting underway as the script was rewritten multiple times and Spielberg backed out of directing, but after landing James Mangold to helm and co-write a new script with Ford v. Ferrari duo Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, the wheels are running smoothly.
Just under a week into production on the long-awaited fifth installment, Twitter users Iain Makepeace, Steve & Karen, and Koast Radio ’80s Mixtape shared images revealing Mikkelsen and Ford around the United Kingdom area in which filming is taking place. The photos see the duo near sets and visiting local eateries and interacting with the fans. Check out the photos below:

Though previous set photos have offered glimpses of Ford back in his original costume and teases of a flashback for the titular adventurer, the new pictures do bring some hope. Ford is clearly back in the saddle, and Mikkelsen is also at work in whatever role he’s taken for the film. It’s likely the rest of the cast are also in the UK shooting with everyone else, but until confirmation comes of them being spotted on set, it’s a mystery for the time being.
With just over a year to go until Indiana Jones 5 arrives in theaters, the House of Mouse will be keeping their lips sealed on what audiences can expect from Ford’s final outing as the whip-cracking archaeologist. That being said, with San Diego Comic-Con slated for a November 2021 run, some five months after the start of shooting, the first set of images or even a trailer may be coming very soon. For the time being, fans of the franchise can pick up the new 4K Ultra HD set and revisit the prior installments to catch up before Indy’s return to theaters in July 2022.
