The adaptation of Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is one of the best-regarded films in the Harry Potter series, and for good reason. Auteur Alfonso Cuarón sat in the director’s chair. The look and feel of the film changed significantly from its predecessors, just in time to match the books’ turn for the dark. Cuarón adapted with a freer, less faithful-to-the-book hand, meaning lots of scenes did not make the leap from page to screen.

10 Details About The Marauders Friendship

In Rowling’s book, Remus Lupin and Sirius Black explain a great deal about their school-era friendship with Harry’s father James and the traitorous Peter Pettigrew. They explain that Remus was confined monthly to the Shrieking Shack for his destructive werewolf changes until his three best friends taught themselves to become Animagi to ease Lupin through each new moon. In the process, Remus and Sirius explain many of Sirius’ seeming attempts on Harry’s life. This scene launched thousands of fanfics and explained key points in the plot, but for some reason, it is left out of the film.

9 Snape’s Lecture About James Potter

The Marauder’s era friendships were cut from the film, and so were the period’s grudges. In the book, when Professor Snape corners Harry on his way back from Hogsmeade, Snape fires off a dramatic mini-speech about Harry’s similarity to his father James. Snape’s speech is full of menace, long-nursed grudges, and truths about his father and friends’ unkindness and recklessness that Harry simply does not want to hear. The scene reveals much about Snape’s motivations and treatment of Harry and would have been quite something in Alan Rickman’s capable hands.

8 Snape’s Class Is Out Of Session – And So Is McGonagall’s

Hogwarts classes certainly had their ups and downs, but most of them don’t make it into Cuarón’s film at all. Viewers are not treated to any of Professor McGonagall’s Transfiguration classes. More surprisingly, Professor Snape’s ever-dramatic Potions class is also cut entirely from the film. Indeed, viewers are treated to hardly any class time, except for an occasional session of Defense Against The Dark Arts. Hermione would not approve.

7 Unfogging The Fidelius Charm

Professor Flitwick’s out-of-classroom lessons on Charms didn’t make it into the film. In the book, Flitwick explains the working of the Fidelius Charm in some detail. This explanation is cut from the film, which is a puzzling decision: Harry’s parents’ use of the Fidelius Charm with Peter Pettigrew as their Secret Keeper sets the plot of the entire book in motion and is key to understanding the bad blood between Sirius and Pettigrew. The Fidelius Charm has a large role to play later in the series as well, so an on-screen tutorial would have been useful to casual viewers as well as dedicated book readers.

6 A Second Hogsmeade Trip

The film only finds time for one trip to Hogsmeade, combining some scenes from two separate trips in the book. In the book, Harry’s first trip can be passed off as good fun.

The book’s scene regarding the second trip helps show Harry’s growing recklessness as he hares off to buy sweets after Gryffindor has been attacked, in spite of Hermione’s furious warnings and a very near miss with Snape on the way.

5 Percy Weasley’s Adolescent Romance

Percy Weasley, the Amy March of the Potter world, has precious few fans. Perhaps it is not surprising that one of his more humanizing plotlines was excised from the film. Percy’s awkward romance with Penelope Clearwater was cut from the film version of Chamber of Secrets. It met the same fate in Prisoner of Azkaban, robbing Ravenclaw viewers of one of the few speaking characters from their house.

4 The Quidditch Final

Lovers of magical games and sports were left unsatisfied by Cuarón’s film. Although the movie does feature a brief scene with a match, Harry and company’s dramatic Quidditch final against Slytherin is cut from the book entirely.

Readers were treated to a tough game against Slytherin and Harry’s chance to hoist his long-desired Quidditch Cup in victory.

3 Hermione’s Firebolt Snitching

Harry’s acquisition of his Firebolt broomstick goes down quite differently in the book and film, and the film’s take spares Harry considerably. In the book, Harry’s Firebolt arrives as a mysterious package long before he has met Sirius. Harry doesn’t want to hear Hermione’s justifiable caution about an expensive present of unknown origin. Hermione ends up going to McGonagall with her suspicions, and Harry holds her responsible for the quarantine of his game-changing Quidditch broom. Harry’s reckless behavior as others try to keep him safe is a major theme in the book, but like Hermione’s warnings, most of those scenes were cut from the film.

2 Ron’s Silent Treatment And Harry’s Long Grudge

The friction between Ron and Hermione is part of the film adaptation, but the severity of the grudge between Ron, Harry and Hermione is greatly downplayed – perhaps to keep Ron and Harry from looking like huge jerks.

In the book, after Crookshanks is suspected of eating Scabbers, Ron gives Hermione the silent treatment for six months. Ron’s anger matches Harry’s irritation at the confiscation of his Firebolt, and the boys end up ostracizing Hermione for most of the book’s length.

1 Hagrid’s Sweet Counsel

In the book, Hermione spends a great deal of time helping Hagrid with his case to try to free Buckbeak. Some of her efforts make it onscreen. Since Ron’s long silent treatment of Hermione is left out of the adaptation, viewers also miss a sweet moment with Hagrid that really shows his character. Hagrid sends a note inviting Ron and Harry for tea and gently admonishes Harry for getting so caught up in Quidditch that he hasn’t got time for his friendships. Ron is also chastised for holding a grudge against a cat.
