Before the final Harry Potter book was released, many fans were fearing the worst. It was a big worry that JK Rowling would kill off the Boy Who Lived or other characters like Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger or Rubeus Hagrid. Fortunately, however, the biggest casualties of the final installment were the likes of Fred Weasley, Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin.

That’s not to say that it was easy, however. Many had close shaves when it came to dying – so we now take a look at 10 characters who nearly perished but were lucky enough to survive.

10 Ginny Weasley

We’re going to start with the Weasleys, who were unlucky to lose Fred but fortunate enough to keep the rest of their clan together. Ginny Weasley, despite being the youngest of the bunch, nearly dies in the Chamber of Secrets after getting too close to the piece of Lord Voldemort’s soul that lived in Tom Riddle’s diary.

Riddle goes on to drain the life from her in order to rejuvenate himself and, at one point, it looks as if he’s succeeded. Luckily, Harry is on hand to save the day and ensure that Ginny sees out her first year at Hogwarts in the process.

9 Bill Weasley

Bill Weasley makes just a fleeting appearance in the two Deathly Hallows movies. He’s far a far more prominent character in the books, though, and is involved in the fight that takes place at Hogwarts following Albus Dumbledore’s death in the Half-Blood Prince.

During that battle, he’s mauled by Fenrir Greyback and rendered a bloody mess, with his own mother and wife stunned by his injuries. He’s able to make a full recovery in the end – but has a fondness for rare steaks. Whether that’s good or bad is for you to judge …

8 George Weasley

While Fred Weasley dies, the family could very nearly have lost George, as well. Like his twin, he’s brave and courageous and volunteers to help escort Harry from Number 4 Privet Drive to The Burrow in Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

Severus Snape aims a curse meant for a fellow Death Eater but it hits George instead and sees him lose an ear. He’s able to make light of the situation by cracking a few jokes but it doesn’t change the fact that he came extremely close to losing his life.

7 Arthur Weasley

The Weasley’s really were lucky to only lose one family member given everything they went through. Arthur Weasley is another who comes close to dying in the Order of the Phoenix book and movie, being attacked by Voldemort’s pet snake Nagini while guarding the Department of Mysteries.

Had it not been for Harry witnessing the attack in his sleep, Arthur would have died. Fortunately, the Order is able to get to him just in time and he ends up making a full recovery, even making it home for Christmas Day (in the movie, that is).

6 Molly Weasley

The fifth member of the Weasley clan to make their list is Molly. It’s not shown in the movies (the film-makers probably thought the family had suffered enough on-screen) but, in the Deathly Hallows book, she comes extremely close to losing her life.

Fuelled with rage after finding out Harry’s alive, Lord Voldemort aims a killing curse in her direction following the death of his trusted lieutenant Bellatrix Lestrange. The Boy Who Lived again comes to the rescue, casting a shield charm that works due to the fact he’s the true owner of the Elder Wand.

5 Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley is the sixth and final Weasley to make the cut. Given how close he is to Harry, he was always going to be in the firing line. But he actually nearly dies in rather bizarre circumstances in the Half-Blood Prince.

After being given the antidote to a love poison, Ron takes a swig from some whiskey given to him by Horace Slughorn. It’s laced with poison, though, and Harry’s quick-thinking manages to save him from a horrible fate. The poison was put into the bottle by Draco Malfoy, who also came close to killing another character …

4 Katie Bell

Katie Bell is a popular member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and somebody who always looks out for others, treating them with kindness and consideration. However, she’s put under the Imperius Curse by Draco in the Half-Blood Prince and is told to deliver a cursed necklace to Albus Dumbledore.

After her friend Leanne grows suspicious a scuffle breaks out and the necklace ends up brushing against her. Harry, with a little help from Hagrid, is able to prevent her dying and she’s taken to hospital, where she spends the majority of her final year at Hogwarts.

3 Draco Malfoy

While he nearly committed murders, Draco Malfoy also comes close to dying himself – on two occasions in particular. The first is when he’s on the receiving end of the Sectumsempra spell, which is cast by Harry and leaves the Slytherin student extremely wounded with gashes all over his body.

And the second is in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, when he’s nearly burned alive inside the Room of Requirement. Harry decides to put their past rivalry aside and saves his enemy. The spell that produced fire was cast by Vincent Crabbe, who wasn’t so lucky …

2 Hermione Granger

Like Draco, Hermione Granger also comes close to dying twice throughout the series. The first is at Malfoy Manor, when she’s tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange and destined to be killed before Dobby the House Elf is able to get her away to safety at Shell Cottage.

The second is when Crabbe aims a killing curse at her, which misses her by a whisker. She’s able to shrug it off, though, and plays a vital role in the Battle of Hogwarts as Lord Voldemort is finally defeated.

1 Harry Potter

Where to start? Whether it’s being on the receiving end of the Killing Curse on his very first birthday to nearly dying in the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry comes so close to dying many, many times throughout the series.

We think he came closest to perishing when he let Voldemort hit him with the Avada Kedavra spell in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, in a risky decision that could have easily backfired. Thankfully it didn’t, though, and he’s able to defeat Voldemort in the end – saving the lives of millions across the globe in the process.
