Harry Potter 10 Horrible Things Professors Did At Hogwarts (That Everyone Forgets About)

The Hogwarts professors were meant to be role models and inspirations for their students but they were still prone to some rather bad decision making. Some had a heart of gold with the occasional weakness, while others were rotten to the core and out there to make life as difficult as possible for their pupils.

We now take a look at 10 bad things Hogwarts staff did throughout their time at the castle. Starting with something that pales in comparison to some of the more dastardly deeds on this lis t…

10 Rubeus Hagrid: Handle Illicit Creatures

Harry Potter 10 Horrible Things Professors Did At Hogwarts (That Everyone Forgets About)

When Harry meets Hagrid in the Sorcerer’s Stone, one of the first things he’s told is that the half-giant would love to own a dragon – despite them being banned by law. Later in the movie and book, however, he illegally obtains one by winning the creature in a bet with Professor Quirrell, who has gone undercover to earn his trust.

Had the Ministry of Magic found out, Hagrid would likely have had to spend time in Azkaban prison. Fortunately, Harry and Hermione (and Ron in the movie) are able to enlist the help of Charlie Weasley, who takes it away to Romania. This gets Hagrid off the hook but the youngsters are all given detention for being out after dark.

9 Sybill Trelawney: Tell Students They’re Doomed To Die

Sybill Trelawney is a bizarre teacher with her subject of Divination labeled ‘woolly’ by Hermione Granger at one point. And she loses the support of Harry fairly early into his time in her classroom by repeatedly insisting he was going to die.

Usually, you want your superiors to be backing you and helping you succeed – rather than insisting you’re destined to not live for the very long. It’s with great delight that Harry is able to give up the subject after his O.W.L exams, having failed the subject.

8 Gilderoy Lockhart: Live By A Lie

Everybody is besotted by Gilderoy Lockhart when he first appears in the Chamber of Secrets, with the wizard enchanting everyone with his tales of courage and heroism. Yet it’s later revealed that he took credit for the adventures of other magical folk and he’s been lying the whole time, rendering him a massive fraud in the process.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Lockhart then attempts to wipe the memories of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley to stop them from blabbing. Unfortunately for him, the curse backfires and the once-great wizard is forced to spend the rest of his days in St. Mungo’s hospital, relying on nurses to help him survive.

7 Severus Snape: Bullied His Students

Harry Potter 10 Horrible Things Professors Did At Hogwarts (That Everyone Forgets About)

Severus Snape may have turned out to be a good guy in the end but, despite this, he’s still a loathsome character for the most part. The Potions Master makes the subject a living hell for many of his students and takes great pleasure in bullying the likes of Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom.

Neville is so terrified of Snape it impacts his self-confidence and his boggart is actually the Hogwarts professor as a result of this. We still find it hard to believe Albus Dumbledore tolerated such treatment of his pupils – a rare blotch on the Hogwarts headmaster’s copybook.

6 Horace Slughorn: Favored Students

If there’s anything demotivating to a student, it’s when you feel your teacher has their favorites within the class. And Horace Slughorn is guilty of giving students preferential treatment, often leaving other pupils marginalized as a result.

Slughorn cherishes Harry (for his fame) and Hermione (for her brains) but leaves Ron feeling unwanted and useless by failing to give him any attention. He even coins the phrase the ‘Slug Club’ for those students who impress him most. While he was a good enough person, this was certainly a weakness.

5 Horace Slughorn: Telling Voldemort About Horcruxes

Horace Slughorn is the only Hogwarts professor to make this list twice. And that’s because his decision to tell Tom Riddle about Horcruxes is a crime that deems him worthy of inclusion.

Riddle asks Slughorn about Horcruxes and the Potions Master doesn’t just give out information – he gives out PLENTY of information. This, ultimately, backfires spectacularly with Riddle going on to make seven Horcruxes, rendering him virtually immortal and giving him the freedom to inflict pain and suffering on others until his death in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

4 Albus Dumbledore: Snubs Harry

Harry Potter 10 Horrible Things Professors Did At Hogwarts (That Everyone Forgets About)

Harry is in a really low place when we see him in the Order of the Phoenix, having watched Cedric Diggory die and Lord Voldemort return to power during the events of the Goblet of Fire. The Boy Who Lived needs all the support he can get, particularly with other students treating him badly, but Albus Dumbledore chooses to snub him instead.

While Dumbledore had a reason for this – he was afraid of letting Lord Voldemort get too close to himself – it’s a shocking act nonetheless. It leads to Harry enduring the worst year of his school life with very little support from his superiors and, for the Hogwarts headmaster, it’s a rare stain on his record.

3 Amycus And Alecto Carrow: Encouraging Unforgivable Curses

Hogwarts falls into the hands of the Death Eaters during the events of both Deathly Hallows movies, with Lord Voldemort installing Amycus And Alecto Carrow as Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers, as well as putting Severus Snape into the role as headmaster.

The Carrow siblings are repulsive human beings and, during their time at the school, encourage the use of Unforgivable Curses. Not only do they teach students how to cast them, they also force others to endure them. Many pupils take to hiding in order to avoid feeling their wrath – with the Room of Requirement as a popular spot to lie low.

2 Dolores Umbridge: Attacked People

Harry Potter 10 Horrible Things Professors Did At Hogwarts (That Everyone Forgets About)

Dolores Umbridge was rotten to the core – but her fondness for physically attacking people makes her one of the worst people in the entire Harry Potter universe. She does this through a variety of methods with the standout via a quill that cuts into your very skin – leaving you going back to your dormitory with your hand bleeding and sore.

Umbridge also attacks Dolores Umbridge and Rubeus Hagrid, casting stunning spells at them during a late-night ambush. We’re glad she gets her comeuppance at the end of her year at Hogwarts, with the Centaurs of the Forbidden Forest giving her a rough old time.

1 Quirinus Quirrell: Attempted Murder

Throughout Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, he’s convinced that Severus Snape was working for Lord Voldemort in order to obtain the Sorcerer’s Stone. This isn’t the case, though, with Quirinus Quirrell instead the man doing the Dark Lord’s bidding.

Quirrell attempts to murder Harry during a battle for the stone at the end of the movie – and comes very close to succeeding. Fortunately, Lily Potter’s protective love still exists and this means he can’t touch the Boy Who Lived without experiencing unspeakable pain. Quirrell fails his master and dies as a result, with Voldemort then fleeing and leaving his servant while showing no remorse.
