Lord Voldemort’s most loyal and devoted followers are a group of dark wizards and witches who commonly call themselves Death Eaters. Not only are they some of the most frightening magic wielders in the entire wizarding world, they also came dangerously close to achieving their goal of completely conquering all of wizardkind.

However, it’s easy to understand why exactly their goals failed. As a whole, the Death Eaters made a series of obvious and fatal mistakes that ensured that no matter how far they got, they would ultimately lose all they’d gained and then some. So what were the biggest mistakes of the Death Eaters?

10 Having No Ideology

One of the clearest and most obvious issues for Death Eaters is also one of their simplest. They don’t actually believe in anything.

Yes, the follow Voldemort, but half of them don’t even seem to like him all that much, and for the most part everyone who has joined him just did it so they could run roughshod over the rest of the magical world. No uniting ideology between them meant they were guaranteed to fall apart.

9 Believing Their Own Hype

Death Eaters are undoubtedly a collection of extremely powerful witches and wizards who are willing to cross lines that any sane magical folk wouldn’t dare, but they are hugely driven by the notion of their own exceptional superiority.

The fact that they think they are better than everyone gives them a lot of obvious weaknesses, and underestimating their opponents has been a consistent problem for club Voldemort.

8 Making Untrustworthy Alliances

The aims of Voldemort and his Death Eaters are astonishingly high. They basically want to overtake the entire magical world, and seemingly want to subjugate the entire muggle world as well.

And doing something of that magnitude that requires such sacrifice and work is extremely difficult if it’s being done by a group of people who can’t trust each other in the slightest. Knowing that an allegiance is fickle is a recipe for disaster.

7 Being Sadistic

One of the most obvious and stupidest mistakes of this dark wizard organization is that they hurt people for fun.

There is a reason that “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” is a classic saying, and the behavior of the Death Eaters means that the only people in the world who will actually support and enjoy their rule is the Death Eaters themselves.

6 Looking Out For Their Interests At The Expense Of Others

Something that always seems to be lost on the Death Eaters is that they are the few, and the rest of the wizarding world are the many.

And when their little crew is so vastly outnumbered, then any power that can be gained won’t be held for long if the majority is always losing and the Death Eaters are always gaining. Dominating all of wizardkind means taking them into consideration on some level as well.

5 Oppressing Half-Bloods

The wizarding world is an extremely small fraction of the entire world at large, and the number of pure blood wizards is an even smaller fraction of that.

Treating half-bloods like second class citizens is a huge mistake, because they are a valuable resource that could be beneficial instead of just something to be controlled. Plus, since the leader of the entire Death Eater movement is half blood, this particular prejudice seems incredibly hypocritical.

4 Going After Muggles

Unfortunately, prejudice against muggles is just a reality of the wizarding world, even if that bigotry is wrong. But it’s one thing to disdain them from afar, and it’s quite another to decide to subjugate them in some manner.

The Death Eaters are already massively outnumbered by the other witches and wizards in the world, but if they actually tried to do anything against muggles? They’re too far outmatched to ever win, even with their powers.

3 Underestimating Harry Potter

Apparently the Death Eaters are pretty slow learners. Harry Potter managed to face off against Voldemort’s killing curse when he was just a baby and lived, so the expectation that Voldy would be able to just take out Harry and become king of all wizards was absurd.

Not to mention, it’s not just about Harry the person, it’s about Harry the symbol, and how easily he can inspire people to stand up against Voldemort.

2 Underestimating The Power Of Love

There are some pretty clear indications that Voldemort’s inability to love is what completely undid his entire plot for world domination, but the rest of the Death Eaters should have had more insight than he did.

Love is the strongest bond that anyone can experience, and most people are willing to risk everything for it, so they should have known what threats would be presented to them because of it.

1 Following Voldemort

It’s understandable that the Death Eaters were attracted to the power that Voldemort had, but they should have realized that there was nothing else that made him worth dealing with.

He cared for nothing and no one besides himself, and he made no bones about disposing of even his most loyal followers if he felt the urge to, so aligning themselves with that kind of narcissistic monster meant they were already doomed to fail.
