When a universe is as large and complex as that of Harry Potter, there are bound to be some plot holes. But then again, there are also plot holes that aren’t actually plot holes at all.

Things can get confusing and convoluted, especially when seven books are turned into eight movies and there isn’t enough screen time to explain all the intricacies. Some things are character flaws, misinformation from the films, or not thought of at first as obvious answers.

10 How The Resurrection Stone Still Worked After Destroying The Horcrux

The Resurrection Stone was the stone in Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, the ring Voldemort turned into a Horcrux. For a Horcrux to be absolutely irrevocably destroyed, the container or thing holding the fragment of the soul must be irreplaceably damaged.

When Dumbledore destroyed the Horcrux hidden in the Resurrection Stone, he did it in a way that the stone was cracked permanently but the charm remained.

9 Lily And James As Their Own Secret-Keepers

Lily and James could have chosen themselves to be their own Secret-Keepers. But they also had no reason to mistrust their friend Wormtail. This is the same Wormtail who became an Animagus, who had his name on the Marauder’s Map, who knew Remus’s secret. It was also at Sirius’s insistence that they changed from him to Peter. And why should they think Sirius would put them in harm’s way?

These are the people they chose over Dumbledore. The Fidelius Charm is one of trust, to give it to someone who they know will keep their secret, as it can only be given through that person’s own will. Lily and James believed in their friends. Had they chosen themselves, there also would have been some practical issues with knowing when to leave the safety of their home. This can also just be a character error for sake of the plot.

8 Why Harry Only Saw The Thestrals After Cedric Died

Many ask why Harry, who is no stranger to death, didn’t see the Thestrals until after Cedric’s death when he had already seen his parents die. But Harry didn’t see anything from his crib, he was only one at the time and the impact was but a story. In the case of the Dementor scream he is remembering, could this not be the sliver of Voldemort’s soul remembering the moment of separation?

In the case of why Harry didn’t see the Thestrals when he took the carriages to Hogsmeade station after Cedric died that year, Rowling mentioned that the grief and bereavement within Harry was still shock and he had not yet processed Cedric’s death.

7 Why The Horcrux Inside Harry Wasn’t Destroyed By The Basilisk Venom

For a Horcrux to be truly destroyed, the vessel holding the fragment of Voldemort’s soul must be damaged beyond repair. When Harry was inside the Chamber of Secrets, he was pierced by the Basilisk’s venom, but Harry did not die.

Harry, being the vessel, remained alive due to Fawke’s healing tears, and therefore, the Horcrux was unharmed.

6 Why Time-Turners Suddenly Disappear

This is only a plot hole for those who have not read the books. Time-Turner’s make an appearance in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and then seemingly disappear.

In the books, it is explained that all the time turners within the Department of Mysteries were destroyed after the battle in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

5 Snape’s Role In Protecting The Philosopher’s Stone

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, it is said that Snape can’t be the one trying to steal the stone as he was one of the people protecting it. In the movies, the question of how is never addressed, but in the books, there is a clear answer.

Just as McGonagall created her Wizard’s Chess obstacle, and Flitwick charmed the keys, Snape had created his own level of protection; a potions riddle.

4 How Fred & George Afforded Their Joke Shop

This is addressed in the books but left out of the movies, and it’s a shame. When Harry received his Triwizard winnings at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he didn’t want them. He offered the money to Cedric’s parents but they said they could not take it.

And so, he gave it to Fred and George. This wasn’t without their protesting and bewilderment. If they had not taken the winnings, Harry would have thrown them away. He wanted them to put the money to good use and start experimenting for their brand because everyone could do with a laugh.

3 The Use Of Veritaserum For Interrogation In The Ministry

Veritaserum is a powerful truth serum, so why doesn’t the Ministry of Magic use it for interrogations? Well…they do. It is even shown to be used on Barty Crouch Junior by Dumbledore before his fate was sealed by the Dementor’s Kiss, a plot hole only in the film.

So why don’t they have all the answers? Veritaserum’s effectiveness can be resisted. If a wizard is skilled enough, Rowling mentions that they can use charms and antidotes to ward off the potion. Those proficient in Occlumency can also resist Veritaserum.

2 Voice Inconsistencies With Polyjuice Potion

In the movies, there are plot holes surrounding voices changing or remaining the same when someone takes Polyjuice Potion. When Ron, Hermione, and Harry take Polyjuice Potion to investigate Draco, their voices remain their own.

This is also the case when they break into the Ministry of Magic to find Umbridge. But when Barty Crouch Junior uses Polyjuice Potion, his voice is that of Mad-Eye Moody. In the books, a person’s voice changes with that of their physical form.

1 Why Voldemort Didn’t Have The Death Eaters Take The Unbreakable Vow

This is a character flaw of Voldemort’s. Voldemort is proud and powerful; he wanted loyalty, not fear. He mentions this to his followers in the graveyard in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Voldemort wanted his followers to choose him. In the Battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort said, “come forward and join us, or die.” He did not force anyone’s loyalty.
