The Harry Potter series was set in the 90s and was written in the 90s and early 2000s. While that might not seem that long ago, the series started being written over 20 years ago, so there are many things about the series that would likely be different if it was made now.

Ron Weasley is one of the members of the trio, but he’s the character out of the three of them who feels the most outdated. Here Are the ten things about Ron that wouldn’t make sense if he was written today.

10 He was lazy and expected Hermione to help him all the time

While Ron wasn’t the smartest in his year at Hogwarts, he also wasn’t dumb. He was capable and able to do a decent job in his glasses when he tried, but he rarely put any effort in. He expected things to be easy, and he was incredibly lazy. While this was an annoying thing about him, the worst part was how he relied so much on Hermione and tried to use her all the time. This marks him come across as highly entitled.

9 Not being there for Harry when he needed Ron most

While Ron does have many moments where he’s loyal to Harry and risks a lot to help him, there were two key times when he left Harry behind in a tough spot.

The first happened during the Triwizard Tournament when Harry really needed Ron to believe that he hadn’t put his name in the Goblet of Fire. The second, and worse time, was when he abandoned Hermione and Harry while they were looking for Horcruxes.

8 Not caring about house-elves as long as they took care of him

One of Ron’s biggest overall flaws is that he can be rather selfish. He doesn’t always think too much about how other people feel as long as he is taken care of. The worst example of this was how he viewed the house-elves. He didn’t see anything wrong with their enslavement and was happy to let them pamper him. It made him come across as rather callous and even a bit cruel.

7 He was tactless and rude

While all interesting characters have both strengths and weaknesses, Ron was often the most flawed of the Golden Trio. He was quite tactless and not good at being kind. He would often run his mouth in a blunt way that ended up hurting other people’s feelings. While he often did this to Hermione, he also offended other classmates.

6 His issues with jealousy surrounding women

Ron was quite a possessive and jealous person, and he had quite a few issues when it came to women. He got extremely jealous when Hermione was asked by Krum to the Yule Ball, even though he later turned around and did the exact same thing when he started dating Lavender. He was also weirdly annoyed when Ginny started dating, and he just seemed to have some immature ideas about dating, gender, and girls.

5 How he treated Padma and Hermione at the Yule Ball

While Ron got upset that Hermione went to the Yule Ball with Krum, he really only had himself to blame. But, instead of being kind about it, he ended up making the experience worse for both Hermione and Padma.

He basically ignored his own date because he was sulking, and then he lashed out at Hermione when she hadn’t done anything wrong.

4 Being oblivious to his own privilege

Ron was someone who had quite a bit of inherent privilege in the wizarding world (despite his lack of wealth) and was somewhat oblivious to issues that didn’t impact him. While he was a good person overall, he accepted the status quo and didn’t question things like the treatment of werewolves, giants, and house-elves. He even was wary of Hagrid and Lupin at first when he learned they weren’t “half-breeds”. He was more worried about his own comfort, and he was often judgemental because of the culture he was raised in.

3 The way he treated Hermione overall

While Hermione and Ron might have gotten together and gotten married, their relationship doesn’t make a lot of sense. They never really got along well, and Ron didn’t really treat her that kindly. He was always critical of her and easily annoyed, and his jealousy and emotional immaturity got in the way of their friendship such as the time he blamed her for Crookshanks possibly killing Scabbers. It’s hard to believe that this would have been a great, healthy relationship.

2 Expecting Hermione to be the one to cook for him and Harry

One of Ron’s most outdated moments happens in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when the trio is one the run. Ron is used to having his mother take care of him, so he seems to think that this is a woman’s job. He wants to be taken care of and expects Hermione to be the one to plan and cook the meals. It’s a really frustrating moment that shows how sexist Ron can be.

1 The way he used Lavender Brown

While many of Ron’s most outdated moments have to do with his treatment of Hermione, he treated the other women he interacted with poorly, too. When he started dating Lavender Brown, it was clear this was an immature, teenage relationship. However, it wasn’t cool how he tried to date her to make Hermione jealous and then refused to even break up with her when he didn’t want to be with her anymore.
