Severus Snape may just be the most controversial character from Harry Potter. Teacher of Potions at Hogwarts, he was a man that Harry did not trust in the slightest despite Headmaster Dumbledore’s insistence that he should. Eventually, it was revealed that Snape was a help all along and Harry’s mistrust was misplaced, but there’s still a lot about the way he acted that doesn’t make sense to fans in the context of his backstory.

After all, he was no saint.

10 How He Never Got Over Lily

Snape’s main motivation for helping Harry and the Order of the Phoenix was his love for Lily Potter, who he was infatuated with throughout their Hogwarts years. When she died, he was devastated, but he remained in love with her all the years after. That means twenty-five or so solid years of unrequited love.

Uh, what?

Some may find this sweet, but fans seriously questioned how he hadn’t moved on in that time, and it made it seem like more of an obsession than genuine love.

9 Why He Bullied Harry

The reason for bullying Harry is given in plain text — that Harry was an exact combination of his mother and father, and represented everything Snape hated. But Snape was so good at hiding his emotions that he concealed his real feelings from Voldemort himself, master Legilimens (mind-reader). But he couldn’t conceal his hatred for Harry enough to treat him fairly and not potentially get into a lot of trouble with Dumbledore?

8 Why He Bullied Other Students

As if that’s not enough, it wasn’t just Harry that he mercilessly bullied. Even when she was fourteen, Snape bullied Hermione about her looks, and he constantly ruined Neville’s self-esteem. Okay, there’s a reason for him being hateful towards Harry — but why was he so abusive towards other students when, as a teacher, he was in a position of trust and power?

7 Why He Was So Fond Of Draco Malfoy & The Other Slytherins

Snape favored Draco Malfoy and the other Slytherins. In a way, that makes sense, as it was his own house at Hogwarts.

But it was also the house that led him into the path of Voldemort, the house that led him down a path to tell Voldemort about the prophecy and get Lily murdered as a result. The fact he didn’t harbor any resentment for it at all and in fact, favored the children of Death Eaters, seems wildly odd. Or was it all part of blending in?

6 How He Fooled Voldemort

Snape was good enough at Occlumency that he fooled Voldemort himself, perhaps the hardest person to fool in the Wizarding World except Dumbledore, and he’d been doing this since around the age of twenty-one. Seems odd, that a twenty-one year old was so skilled he was able to fool the darkest wizard of all time. Shouldn’t some experience be required?

5 Why Dumbledore Trusted Him So Implicitly

Dumbledore trusted Snape, and that paid off, but the question remains — why?

If he could fool Voldemort, he could surely fool Dumbledore. There’s also the question of why Dumbledore didn’t reprimand him for treating other students horribly. There seemed to be no disciplinary action for his abuse and even if Dumbledore trusted him, he should have spoken up about Snape’s awful habits.

4 Why He Was A Teacher

Was there no other way he could have stayed close to Dumbledore? Being a teacher was clearly not a position suited for Snape, who could barely stomach looking at Harry and treated other students abusively too. It’s hard to imagine there was no other place Dumbledore could have put him…

3 How He Invented Spells As A Student

No one with sense would deny Snape as a talented wizard, but he was inventing spells when he was of Hogwarts age. This seems an incredible feat, since it’s not even something we saw Hermione attempting. He scribbled them down in his book that Harry later inherited, and these spells were no joke.

2 Why He’s Constantly Described As Having Greasy Hair

Puberty as a teenager is difficult — it comes with spots, and a layer of grease over hair that can’t be gotten rid of no matter how much shampoo is scrubbed into the scalp. But Snape, even as an adult, is described as having greasy hair and it begs the question — why? Was he just not washing it, or was that part of his look at that point?

1 How He Could Fly

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Snape escapes a duel with McGonagall by flying through the window in a bat-like shape. It seems that, like Voldemort, he didn’t require a broomstick to take off — but the question remains, how? How does someone learn to fly without the tools that witches and wizards are taught they need? It doesn’t make much sense, especially as it doesn’t seem that even Dumbledore can do it, but Snape clearly had a lot of hidden talents.
