Neville Longbottom is one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter series, and for good reason. Neville, who shared a birthday close to Harry Potter’s birthday, could have easily been the Chosen One that the prophecy about Voldemort’s demise spoke of. However, Voldemort made the prophecy come true when he attacked Harry’s family and attempted to kill baby Harry.

10 The Time He Stood Up To His Friends

In the first movie of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Neville proved himself to be incredibly brave, by doing something that many people would find extremely difficult. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley snuck out of their common rooms to go try and save the Sorcerer’s Stone, which they believed Professor Snape intended to steal. However, Neville caught his friends sneaking out, and was worried they would cause trouble for the entire Gryffindor house. Standing up to his friends showed Neville’s bravery and urge to fight for what he believed was right.

9 When He Destroyed A Horcrux

Neville Longbottom, who was among one of the few people in the wizarding world who helped in the destruction of Lord Voldemort, proved his bravery when he destroyed a Horcrux by killing Nagini, Voldemort’s snake. Not only was the destruction of the Horcrux impressive, but the way he killed it showed how deserving he was. The Sword of Gryffindor presented itself to Neville, which only happens when the person is capable and deserving. This act alone is reason enough that Neville could have succeeded as the Chosen One, and fans were incredibly proud of this character during that moment.

8 When He Found The Room Of Requirement

Neville Longbottom had proven himself to be incredibly brave many times before this moment, but this moment showed another side of him, a side that was able to accomplish great things. In the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Neville proved yet again, his worthiness of the title of the Chosen One. When Harry Potter and the rest of Dumbledore’s Army were searching for a place to practice magic at Hogwarts while Umbridge had banned all use, they were struggling. It wasn’t until Neville discovered the Room of Requirement, proving himself as a successful leader.

7 When He Refused To Listen To The Carrows

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Neville proved himself another time. During Severus Snape’s time of Headmaster of Hogwarts, death eaters were swarming the school, often left in charge of students, and treating them incredibly unethically. The Carrows were especially keen on torturing students and forcing them to practice the Cruciatus curse on fellow students.

Neville bravely refused, causing him all kinds of trouble, which of course, he didn’t mind. Neville was abused and hurt by the Carrows because of this, which was something he was willing to face for the greater good. He always did the right and noble thing, regardless of the consequences he would face.

6 When He Refused To Join Voldemort

In the film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Neville had some incredible moments. From destroying the final Horcrux, to taking down multiple death-eaters, he had proved himself as capable of the title, the Chosen One by those acts alone. However, Neville proved himself, yet again, during his speech to Voldemort when he returned from the Forbidden Forest announcing Harry’s death. When Voldemort asked his opposers to join him, Neville gave an inspiring speech, calling out Voldemort’s weaknesses and his refusal to ever join him. Neville, who knew he could have been killed on the spot by Voldemort, showed no fear and stood up for what he believed in.

5 Insisting On Fighting At The Department Of Mysteries

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Harry worries that his godfather, Sirius, may be in trouble, he decides to travel there and fight to save him. Of course, his loyal friends wanted to come along, and one who fought hard to go and fight was Neville. Neville who insisted on joining Harry at the Department of Mysteries successfully fought off multiple Death Eaters and protected Harry and their group of friends. When this all went down, it only proved that Neville was just as capable as his group of talent witch and wizard friends, who sometimes outshone Neville in the eyes of Professors or peers.

4 When He Confronted Bellatrix Lestrange

Neville, who was private about his family’s struggles for the first few years of schooling at Hogwarts, only spoke of his gran who took care of him. Neville, whose parents actually faced a fate worse than death, were tortured with the Cruciatus curse during the first wizarding war, by none other than Bellatrix Lestrange, causing them to spend the rest of their life at St. Mungos Hospital, with Neville only getting to visit them every so often. When Neville was fighting at the Ministry, he was confronted by Bellatrix and didn’t turn away. Instead, he tried to fight and bravely protected himself.

3 Keeping Dumbledore’s Army Alive

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Hogwarts was swarming with Death Eaters with Snape as headmaster. During this time, all hope seemed lost for Hogwarts students. However, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione away from school searching for Horcruxes, Neville took it upon himself to act as a leader, keeping students away from harm and protecting his friends.

Neville kept the idea of Dumbledore’s Army alive, seeking safe haven in the Room of Requirement and giving students refuge from The Carrows and other dark forces within the castle, once again proving himself a hero.

2 Taking Down Fenrir Greyback

Many times throughout the Harry Potter series, Neville proved himself to be brave while standing up and protecting himself from dark and powerful witches and wizards to the likes of Bellatrix Lestrange, The Carrows, and even Lord Voldemort. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville fought on the front lines, putting himself in immense danger to protect others and his school. He successfully aided in the killing of the notorious werewolf, responsible for many deaths, Fenrir Greyback. His defeat of this incredibly powerful being proved Neville capable of much more than he was often given credit for.

1 When He Faced Hundreds Of Voldemort’s Followers

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Professor McGonagall iconically instructed Neville and Seamus to destroy the bridge fans had seen their favorite characters walking time and time again. This scene proved Neville’s bravery again, as he successfully burned down the bridge, taking down hundreds of Death Eaters with it. His ability to do this, while also on the bridge, and save himself from falling or burning, just proved his incredible skill as a powerful wizard. This was only one of the many times Neville proved himself worthy of being the Chosen One.
