Now, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m an enormous Potterhead. I’ve read the books, seen the movies, collected the Pop! Figures, played the fairly questionable video games, got the fancy spangly Hogwarts crest lamp beside my bed… when it comes to Harry Potter, I’ve been there and done that.
Even the biggest fans of a franchise, however, tend to have misgivings. When a beloved series is adapted for a movie, lots of us will go in there with our judgmental hats on. We go into it already prepared to disapprove; with one hand already typing out a disapproving forum post as we sit down in the theater.
It’s a curious thing, but often the self-proclaimed ‘biggest fans’ are the people most likely to completely pan a movie. As for me, I went into the film adaptions with an open mind, and was truly impressed. Certain things were omitted, true, but for the most part, I think they’re about as faithful as you can expect a movie adaption to be. The biggest thing about the Potter movies, for me, was how they completely altered my perception of a key character: slimy old Severus Snape.
The Snape in the books is cruel, calculating; a little sinister and an all-round d-bag. Alan Rickman’s take on the character is all of those things as well, true enough. But his enigma, his charisma, carries the day. Let’s try to unravel this mysterious double agent the only way we know how: with fantastic memes.
25 When You’re Just Too Darn Emotional
Now, I may totally dig the actor’s portrayal of Snape, as do much of the community, but what say you? The fact is, nobody’s perfect, and it’s completely freaking impossible to please everyone. Especially on the internet. What do we do when we take issue with the slightest point somebody makes online? We land on them like a sumo wrestler jumping from a tenth storey window onto a grape, that’s what we do.
As such, there are surely those who think that Alan Rickman’s Snape is a little too detached and emotionless.
In the books, he tends to be much more animated. The big screen Snape, meanwhile, doesn’t let much show at all, if anything. Which do you prefer? That’s entirely up to personal choice.

If there’s one thing that a dedicated fandom always likes to do, it’s come up with additional thoughts, theories, stories and events, based around the universes they love so much. We call these headcanons. Some of these are totally out there, but there are times when a fan just completely knocks it out of the park.
This is one of those times. That was my immediate thought when I first saw Daniel Radcliffe in his Igor getup, after all. It brings a very popular Potter idea to vivid life in the real world, and I guess we’ve got to appreciate that. The only trouble is, it may be a little too accurate.

Speaking of Snape’s harrowing past, is it too soon for a meme like this? Of course it is.
It will always be too soon.
As the series approached its grand finale, just as the final installment was winding up, Snape decided to drop one last wave of revelations on us. The reason for his anti-Potter bias and general raging d-baggery was revealed. It was a bittersweet moment.
Sure, the internet likes to characterize this whole business as the worst friend zoning ever, but there’s much more to the whole situation than that. What happened between the young Snape and Lily changed the entire course of the wizarding world. Come on, guys, let’s be serious. This is no time for cheap snarky jokes about cheap snarky romcoms.
22 When You Try To Explain Your Greasiness
When you think about it, that’s really the key to the whole thing. What was the nature of Snape and Lily Evans (soon to be Potter)’s relationship? They weren’t, like, you know, totally a thing now, as they’d say on Mean Girls, but they were very close. He was her first magical friend, after all, which is quite a darn thing for any Muggle-born.
As the book explains, Lily terminates their friendship after Snape gets himself involved in ‘that’ crowd and calls her a Mudblood, that ultimate magical super-slur. He continues to miss her desperately, as is proven by his actions and the extreme measures he takes after Voldemort’s first fall.
Sadly, a lot of memes tend to take a ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Do I Creep You Out approach to explaining Snape’s motives, as per this meme.
21 When They Just Don’t Appreciate Your Heroism (So They Set You On Fire)
I know, Snape. I get it. I’m totally with you. You’re not actually a super bad guy, you just have to keep that charade up so that Voldemort doesn’t twig and crush your throat into a drinking straw, a la Darth Vader.
The fact is, though, sometimes you can be too good of an actor. When you get too used to playing the part of a d-bag, you start to enjoy it. You forget that you’re not really one.
When that’s the case, though, you can hardly complain when somebody calls you out on it.
When you’re performing a counter-curse to try and save Harry, but it sure looks like you’re just plain trying to curse him.
Like you want him to fall and splatter hunks of Potter-flavoured spam all over the Quidditch pitch. When you get set on fire, then, you’ve only yourself to blame.
20 When He Wears Your Grandma’s Clothes And Totally Rocks Them
As I’ve already said, there are certain things about the character of Snape that struck me as completely different. In the transition from page to screen, that is. Somehow, while reading, I had a certain image of the guy in my mind, which was nothing like the Snape we see in the movies. Alan Rickman had a way of effortlessly owning every scene he featured in his movies, and this role was no different.
He just had a charisma. A presence. He didn’t only look the part, he became the part. Most importantly, there was no outfit that Snape-Rickman could not rock. Those huge, billowing robes? Of course. Neville’s grandma’s outfit, in that classic Prisoner of Azkaban boggart moment? You’re darn right he rocked that too.
19 When You’re So Darn Sly That You Don’t Even Remember Whose Side You’re Actually On Anymore
Now, I’ve never been a top-secret super spy in the upper echelons of a terrifying dark wizard’s entourage myself. That’s one of many lives that I am most certainly 100% not about. I’m no expert in that sort of thing, then, but one thing I can tell you is that it’s not an easy job to take on.
That sort of thing changes a person. When you’re effortlessly flitting between sides like that, it affects you. It’s probably easy to get yourself confused, with two sets of utterly contradictory orders to fulfilll and agendas to try and advance.
Wait, am I pretending to be a bad guy under the orders of the good guy so that the bad guy doesn’t suspect me of actually being a good guy, or is it the other way around?
18 When You’ve Just Got That Impossible, Greasy Charm
So, yes. As of the first few books in the series, I found absolutely zero to like about Professor Snape. Why did Dumbledore keep him employed? Why is he allowed to be this way to the students? Why do we keep bringing up the fact that his hair is greasy? How darn bad can it possibly be, for that to keep warranting mentions?
For me, though, once you know where his character is going, you can look back on his earlier transgressions in a new light. You take it easier on him. Part of this is probably due to the Alan Rickman effect, as I say, but whatever the case, he’s become one of the most enduringly popular characters in the franchise. From my first impressions (the first impressions that the author intended, of course), I could not have seen that coming.
17 When You Suddenly Drop A Little Cee Lo Green Out Of Nowhere
Having said all of that, there are certain things that just don’t quite wash with me. Sure, you can understand everything about Snape’s past, all of that trauma, how he must have felt when Harry arrived at Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone, all of that good stuff. The fact remains, though, this is an eleven-year-old boy, right here. I totally get that you both immediately hated each other equally, but still.
Come on, Severus, someone really should have been the bigger man in these petty exchanges.
Do you know which one of you it should have been? I’ll give you a clue: the teacher. I don’t care how fabulous your hair-flicks may be (and they totally are, I’m not disputing that for a second), you can’t just be like that.
16 When The Half-Blood Prince Was The Real MVP
Now, I’m happy to say that my school days are far behind me. Having survived all the way through university as well, I think I can safely say that I’ve had a darn lifetime’s worth of education. If you’ve got a fork handy, don’t bother sticking it in me. I can save you the trouble, because I’m definitely done.
After all those years of math, geography, science, English literature and everything else, I see this meme, and it still makes me quite sad. Not once, it all that time, did I nab a textbook that anybody had written the answers in. Not once did anybody pull a Half-Blood Prince on me. Lots of inappropriate doodles of people without their pants on, but answers? Nope. Not a one.

From everything we’ve seen so far in this rundown, even relative newbies to the Potterverse have probably discerned that Snape is not the most fun of people. He exists to be a miserly old party pooper. As such, it’s probably safe to assume that he’s not the photobombing sort.
Still, people can surprise you at times. Heck, if Queen Elizabeth II can photobomb like a pro, then really, we can’t put it past anyone.
What’s that you say? Harry and Sirius want to share a beautiful and emotional reunion?
Not on Snape’s watch. There he is, wearing a characteristically sour expression. Because it’s not Snape if he doesn’t look as though you’ve just personally roundhouse kicked his grandma in the face.
14 When The Gryffindor Life Just Isn’t For You
As we’ve probably firmly established by now, that wily old Severus is not the president of the Harry Potter fan club. He’s more the kind of guy who’d make those Potter Stinks badges from Goblet of Fire. He probably low key did, because that’s just the sort of hilariously petty thing he’d do.
So is this meme, come to that. There’s always a certain rivalry between the Hogwarts houses, and Gryffindor and Slytherin seem to reserve a powerful blend of hatred just for each other. As the head of Slytherin house, Snape was inevitably going to be against McGonagall’s house, but his natural disposition makes him take the whole thing just a stage further. I’m sure this sort of thing happened constantly.
Still, if Dumbledore can magically award Gryffindor a couple of hundred points, just because Harry remembered to flush after pooping or something, why shouldn’t Snape do the same in reverse?
13 When There’s A Time And A Place For Turning To Page 394
It’s curious, sometimes, how the meme-makers of the internet operate. Sometimes, it’s the most mundane, simple thing that becomes a phenomenon online. In the Potterverse, the iconic turn to page 394 is one of the best examples of this.
At face value, the line really is nothing at all. It’s Snape’s delivery of it that makes the whole thing. Once that was established, a glorious meme was born. Like all the best memes, the line is far more versatile than you’d expect. It crops up in every situation you can imagine.
Once again, it will never not be too soon for this sort of thing.
This unfortunately-worded FaceBook quiz, for instance. Just when you thought your feels were safe, were going to get a break, someone pulls this sort of thing on them.
I can’t look at that face any more. I can’t. I won’t. I mustn’t.
12 When Speaking Super Slowly Is Your Whole Thing
As is always the case with these sorts of adaptions, certain things are going to change. A lot of the time, as we’ve established, they’ll be changing for the (perceived) worse, and we’ll be cursing on the internet about it accordingly. Other times, though, we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Take our duplicitous old buddy Snape, for instance. Prior to his first movie appearance in Philosopher’s Stone, I couldn’t have imagined him speaking with Alan Rickman’s patented super sloooooow style. Eight movies later, I can’t imagine him speaking any other way. It’s odd, when you think about it. Oftentimes, Hollywood is accused of ruining franchises, by taking the least imaginative, most cash-tastic route. In this case, however, I think a character was forever changed for the better by his big screen appearance.
11 When You Were Feeling A Little Down, Until You Remembered That You’re Severus ‘Swag’ Snape
Now, as fans will know, JK Rowling has never been one for one-dimensional, typically evil villains. Granted, Bellatrix Lestrange is certainly unhinged, but we also get an interesting, almost sympathetic, look into the childhood of big bad Voldemort.
Severus Snape, too, is presented as a villain for much of the series’ run. During Harry’s Occlumency lessons, however, we inadvertently get a glimpse into the teacher’s memories, and anybody who has experienced bullying will know what a rough past the poor guy’s had.
He’s one of the most melancholy, po-faced characters in Harry Potter, and for darn good reason. As such, there’s something totally jarring about this fleeting smile. Snape’s face just doesn’t work that way. This is just uncomfortable in every possible way. Stop that, Alan Rickman.
10 When You Rock That Wig Like Nobody’s Business
As the old song goes, “You walked into the party, like you were walking onto a yacht. Your hat strategically dipped below one eye, your scarf it was apricot. You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte… you’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you.”
According to singer Carly Simon, You’re So Vain was partly inspired by filmmaker Warren Beatty. Which is all well and good, but never mind that.
We’re here to discuss the fact that this may as well have been Severus Snape’s theme song.
As I say, he just owns every scene he appears in, with that dark, brooding demeanour and those flowing locks. I’m not sure what it is about old Severus, I really couldn’t tell you, but he owns it.
9 When You’re The Winning-est Winner Who Ever Won
You know, I’ve always thought that Snape’s speech about Harry and Sirius being two of a kind (both constantly whining about how bitterly unfair their lives have been) was just beyond hypocritical. This was during one of Harry’s Occlumency lessons, in which he gets a glimpse into Snape’s own sorry past. What does the potions master do after that? Proceeds to have a darn good whine himself, that’s what.
In the eyes of the fans, however, Alan Rickman’s take on Snape completely rises above all of that past unpleasantness.
He is a winner, somehow. He is super cool and popular suddenly.
If not in his own universe, then certainly in ours. I’m not sure how much good that actually does him, but it’s a silver lining nonetheless.
8 When Slytherin Win The House Cup (Except They Don’t, Because Dumbledore)
That earlier entry about Snape’s elusive smile got me thinking. Surely there are some things that bring his cold, grease-laden metallic heart some joy? You know, those tiny, priceless moments in our everyday lives, which we really do need to take the time to enjoy.
For the po-faced master of potions, one of those would surely be supporting his beloved Slytherin house. In this shot from the first movie, Slytherin are about to be awarded the house cup, before… well, we know what happened there. Dumbledore went all Oprah on Gryffindor (you get points and you get points and you get points), just to be cantankerous.
Before the Slytherin sabotage, though, this was the most enthusiastic we ever saw Snape. The hands are clapping excitedly, and the face… well, it’s as inscrutable as ever, but it’s something at least.
7 When You Finally Do Get Emotional, And The Magical Memory Tears Flow
Do you remember that one Friends episode with Paul, Rachel’s one-time boyfriend (and father of Ross’s also one-time girlfriend Elizabeth)? Of course, you do. He was played by Bruce Willis, and that’s not something you see every day. The point is, Rachel had called Paul out on his emotional detachment, convincing him to share more. Once he did, he cried and cried for hours on end.
Granted, we can’t take darn nineties sitcoms too seriously, but this made an important point. As our mamas and those cheesy old after school specials have told us, it’s never healthy to keep everything inside.
Just look at Snape. He literally put a hunk of his memories and emotions into a little vial for Harry, and that didn’t work out well for anyone concerned.
6 When You Are The True Fashionista
So, yes. By now, we’re all totally familiar with the ways of this guy. With the snark, the cruelty, the malevolence that exudes from every pore of Snape’s body. We get that. We’ve made our peace with it. After all, sometimes, people just deserve a little derision.
Harry was kind of a bozo right back to him, after all.
Still though, Snape. That doesn’t give you carte blanche to just talk any smack you like. After all, the guy who billows around the place in a Star Wars villain-esque cloak isn’t really the person to be dispensing fashion advice. You know what they say about people who live in glass houses.
Having said all of that, a fashion equivalent of Gordon Ramsay’s Twitter reviews of terrible food would be pure gold.
