The Harry Potter franchise spent over a decade cultivating a fandom and becoming one of the most successful and beloved franchises of all time, with its magical ways stretching throughout a line of novels and films that have been consumed and adored by all manner of people. The film series ended nearly a decade ago with what many consider to be the finest of the lot in The Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

The film undoubtedly ended the movie saga on a high, with a breakneck pace packed with emotional satisfaction. In the moments where there was a breath allowed, there was levity and humor, but also incredible heartbreak to go with the bittersweetness of it ending.

10 Funniest – That Voldemort Hug

This moment is one of the strangest in all eight of the Potter movies and is a truly painfully awkward thing to watch. However, it is actually so awkward it has become funny, particularly after you get over the weirdness of the first time watching it.

Voldemort welcoming Draco with open arms and giving him one of the oddest hugs in cinema history is not rolling on the floor funny, but this movie does not really go for that; instead, it just elicits weirded out chuckles from fans.

9 Saddest – The Dumbledores

Albus Dumbledore is an incredibly mysterious character, even after his death. The biggest reality check for that comes in these final two movies, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s meeting with Aberforth pretty much summing it up.

The book is a lot more detailed and heartbreaking, but this is like the final test for Harry, a final chance to turn back. This scene makes clear there is a darkness to Dumbledore and his past, and that darkness had something to do with the death of he and Aberforth’s sister, whom he clearly adores.

8 Funniest – “You Blithering Idiot.”

Argus Filch, squib and caretaker of Hogwarts, has a small role in most of the Potter movies and is often providing comic relief, doing so again here with his timekeeping.

Rushing in after Harry’s return, the Order’s barge-in, and Voldemort’s ultimatum for everyone, Filch screams about students out of bed only to hear the sharp reply of Professor McGonagall, who calls him a “blithering idiot.” David Bradley and Maggie Smith are always standouts, and having Slytherin sent to the dungeons was a bonus for many fans.

7 Saddest – Seeing The Victims Of The Battle

One of the most harrowing sequences in all of Harry Potter is when Harry walks through the Great Hall, observing all the damage done in the battle.

It is utterly heartbreaking seeing all the damage done, Lupin and Tonks lying there together, dead, people mourning, people defeated, and, of course, Fred, dying there surrounded by his family in what is one of the worst deaths of the series by far in terms of sadness.

6 Funniest – Seamus’ Particular Proclivity For Pyrotechnics

Seamus Finnegan is one of the many recurring characters in Harry Potter and provided many funny moments throughout the years, with a few of them pertaining to his inadvertent love of explosions.

Here, McGonagall gives Seamus permission to blow the bridge due to his “particular proclivity for pyrotechnics,” one of the funniest lines in the entire movie. On top of that, this scene also has McGonagall display pure joy at being able to unleash Piertotum Locomotor, another hilarious moment from the brilliant Maggie Smith.

5 Saddest – Harry’s Death

Sticking with the theme of death, if there was one person everyone was sure would not die it was the titular character; alas, he has a pretty emotional death in this final film.

Of course, he is resurrected, so the death does not pack the same emotional gut punch as that first watch/read, but the entire build-up where he talks to Ron and Hermione, and then to his lost loved ones, are all very emotional, with “until the very end” opening the floodgates for many fans.

4 Funniest – Poor Ron

Before his death and resurrection, and before the battle itself, Harry, Ron, and Hermione had to actually return to Hogwarts, to the place they left behind to go on this suicidal journey to find the Horcruxes and defeat Voldemort.

When they are led back by Neville through Aberforth’s secret passageway, they meet many friends, including Ginny, who is ecstatic to see Harry, not taking notice of anything else, much to the chagrin of Ron. But like Seamus points out, there is only one Harry.

3 Saddest – “Always.”

Harry Potter 5 Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Deathly Hallows Part 2

Severus Snape is a terrific character, performed phenomenally by Alan Rickman, and one of the best of the entire series. Even though there are issues with his obsessive ways and his treatment of Harry etc. that does not remove from his quality nor hurt the emotion he inspires in this movie – to most.

Snape’s death is initially tragic due to its brutality. But when the memories are watched through by Harry, and audiences get the full story, of Dumbledore’s plan, of Snape’s role, of Snape’s unwavering adoration for Lily which then oozed over into protection of Harry, and that heart-wrenching “always” it makes for not only great explanation for some things but a powerful, poignant moment.

2 Funniest – Molly Protects Her Family

Harry Potter 5 Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Deathly Hallows Part 2

The Battle of Hogwarts provides a slew of brilliant moments, a couple of which have been mentioned already. But undoubtedly one of the funniest and most satisfying is when Molly Weasley takes on Bellatrix Lestrange.

The same Bellatrix who killed Sirius, tortured Neville’s parents, and killed Dobby was attempting to do the same to the Weasley’s, specifically Ginny, only for Molly to intervene in badass fashion and kill Bellatrix. Perhaps unexpected, yet wonderful.

1 Saddest – The End

There is no doubt that The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is full of heartbreaking moments, but perhaps the worst in that regard, the one that still causes tears whenever the saga is put on for a rewatch, is the end.

Seeing Harry, Ron, and Hermione all grown up watching their children leave on the train to Hogwarts and knowing that is the end of that story, of that long and magical journey is a hard pill to swallow even a near-decade later.
