From Dumbledore to Umbridge, which teachers of the magical arts in Harry Potter were beloved, and which were despised?

Every Harry Potter fan has dreamed of going to Hogwarts themselves – and not just for switching staircases, Great Hall feasts, roaming ghosts, and Hogsmeade trips… but for the actual lessons! From learning about divination to transfiguration, the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry have the most incredible school subjects in Britain – but not always the best teachers.

The Hogwarts professors seem to exist under their own rules (or lack thereof), with teachers being allowed to get away with strange (and incredibly dangerous) punishments, physical and emotional abuse, and extreme favoritism. Of course, there are also those professors that are kind, fair, and fascinating – but sadly, they sometimes feel like they are in the minority!

10 Loved: Albus Dumbledore

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

This is something of a contentious entry, because it is heavily dependent on the fan, and whether they are considering the books or the films. Either way, Dumbledore is loved for most of the series, and more than that, by most of the students. He is incredibly powerful, but knows how to temper that and what his own weaknesses are. He values co-operation and student safety above almost everything else, and is incredibly caring when it comes to the teachers. Of course, he’s also got his moments where he appears manipulative and wildly unfair to other houses when Harry is around, but no one is perfect!

9 Hated: Severus Snape

This is also a contentious entry, because for some people, Snape was redeemed in his final moments by his love of Lily and the revelation that he only killed Dumbledore on the man’s own instructions. However, for most fans, Snape has to be one of the least popular teachers at Hogwarts. He is consistently mean to students, with the exceptions of his personal favorites. He is unfair when it comes to teaching and testing, he keeps secrets, and his ‘love’ of Lily is actually quite creepy (not to mention his decision to take out his jealousy of James on Harry).

8 Loved: Alastor Moody

The last of the controversial entries is Mad-Eye Moody – and this is only controversial because for the period of time that Moody was a professor at Hogwarts, it wasn’t Moody at all, but Barty Crouch Jr.

However, he gets an honorary mention as a professor, and after he was freed and took his place as one of the Order of the Phoenix, it became clear that he was a powerful ally and, while a bit eccentric, an incredible friend to Harry.

7 Hated: Horace Slughorn

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

Slughorn wasn’t as outright evil as some of the other hated professors at Hogwarts, but he was pretty appalling anyway. He was a solid teacher, but like many others, he had clear favorites. In Slughorn’s case, at least he didn’t show his favoritism by actively bullying some of his class, but his decision to have an exclusive club of the privileged, connected, and talented students was an odious thing to do. Add in his pomposity, his habit of namedropping, and of course, his role in Tom Riddle becoming Voldemort, and it’s no wonder most fans hate him.

6 Loved: Remus Lupin

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

Remus Lupin isn’t just one of the most loved teachers at Hogwarts, he is one of the most loved characters in the entire series. Although his werewolf nature makes him an outcast in wizarding society, he is consistently kind, thoughtful, and invested in his students. As a teacher, he is thorough and capable, and possibly the only really fantastic Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher Harry has.

5 Hated: The Carrows

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

Amycus and Alecto Carrow are given significantly more attention in the books than the movies, but they do get a mention in the film when Neville is explaining how things have changed at Hogwarts. These siblings were brought in by Umbridge, and were vicious, mean, and abusive teachers.

Alecto taught Muggle Studies, but taught the students that muggles were less than witches and wizards. Amycus taught Defense Against The Dark Arts (really, just Dark Arts by this point), and had students practice the Cruciatus Curse on younger students.

4 Loved: Rubius Hagrid

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

Like Remus, Hagrid was so much more than just a professor to the Golden Trio, and to the fans. Originally, he was gamekeeper, but his love of all living things saw him taking on the post of Care of Magical Creatures Professor later in the series. Admittedly, as a teacher, Hagrid left a lot to be desired, as his lessons were meandering, off-topic, and not particularly focused on what would appear in exams. However, it’s impossible not to love this loyal half-giant.

3 Hated: Gilderoy Lockhart

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

Much like Slughorn, Lockhart wasn’t quite as evil as some of the professors over the years, but he was appallingly vain, and completely immoral. He didn’t care about Dark magic or Death Eaters, though. Instead, Lockhart cared only about fame – and would do anything to get it. He stole the stories of capable witches and wizards, wiped their memories, and claimed their achievements as his own… and he was even going to wipe the memories of his own students to protect his skin. It seems that he truly got what he deserved.

2 Loved: Minerva McGonagall

Harry Potter 5 Most Likable Professors (5 We Cant Stand)

There’s no one like Professor McGonagall. She’s not the kind of friendly figure that some of the other professors are, but she is impeccably fair, a phenomenal teacher, an incredible witch, and a woman of great bravery and clear morals. Unlike so many other teachers, she does not play favorites, and she reacts appropriately to student misdemeanors. However, it’s the moments where she steps out of this perfectly fair authoritarian role that really makes fans love her. From her attacking Snape and getting excited about using the spell to bring the statues to life and protect the school, she’s incredibly real. Have a biscuit, Professor McGonagall.

1 Hated: Dolores Umbridge

This should come as no surprise – Dolores Umbridge, for many, is more hated than Voldemort himself. This pink-clad dictator first entered the school as Defence Against The Dark Arts Professor, but also as an inspector for the Ministry, and someone with the ability to enforce whatever rules she saw fit. These included, among many, many other things, the creation of an ‘Inquisitorial Squad’, banning clubs, banning boys and girls sitting together (Umbridge clearly didn’t think about Queer witches and wizards…), and of course, literally torturing students by making them write lines in their own blood. She used veritaserum on children, fired Professor Trelawney, read student’s mail, and didn’t even teach them anything effective!
