In the Harry Potter series, Fred and George Weasley were the biggest comic relief characters. The Weasley twins’ main attribute was their humorous quality, and they were known to play pranks on everyone. This included their own siblings, rivals, and pretty much anyone they thought would make a good target.

The boys were comedians in general, as they came up with jokes on the spot which further stayed true to their characterizations. However, they certainly took these across the limit, making their pranks cruel even if they didn’t realize it. While a few can be given a pass, others were too mean-spirited to ignore.

10 Cruel: Enlarging Dudley’s Tongue To Choke Him

In Goblet of Fire, the Weasleys arrived at Privet Drive to take Harry to the Burrow. Fred knew that Dudley was on a diet and wouldn’t be able to resist any candy, and slyly dropped one for him to pick up. It turned out to be a toffee that enlarged his tongue to the point that Dudley choked on it.

All the Weasley siblings and Harry thought it was hilarious, with Fred claiming it was a prank. However, it wasn’t really funny since Dudley was a Muggle and was even close to dying had Mr. Weasley not managed to fix him. Not to mention that the event also traumatized Dudley.

9 Funny: Enchanting Percy’s Prefect Badge

The authority that Hogwarts prefects possess has been inconsistent in the series, with Percy somehow managing to deduct points when others couldn’t. Due to Percy getting a big head about this, Fred charmed Percy’s prefect badge in Chamber of Secrets to read “Pinhead” instead.

Even funnier was that Percy never realized this and flaunted his badge around the school, not understanding why students found him amusing all of a sudden. Since Percy always did brag too much about being a prefect, this was a hilarious comeuppance.

8 Cruel: Smacking Quirrell In The Head With Enchanted Snowballs

While Dumbledore’s suspicions about Quirrell turned out to be right, Fred and George never had a clue that he was in cahoots with Voldemort. They simply saw him as a meek professor, which they took advantage of by charming snowballs to smack Quirrell’s turban.

This was physical bullying, plain and simple, since Quirrell was assaulted relentlessly. There’s also the fact that he never did anything to the twins, making Fred and George’s joke malicious in nature.

7 Funny: George’s “Holey” Joke

The twins could always be trusted to make light of even the grimmest situations and George certainly proved this. After losing his ear to Snape’s spell in Deathly Hallows, George was bloodied and knocked out, only to stir and claim he was feeling “saintlike.”

When pressed upon by Fred over what he meant, George revealed it was a pun on the lack of an ear, meaning he was now “holey.” Staying true to his humorous nature, Fred claimed there were a lot of ear-related jokes George could have come up with and picked the poorest one.

6 Cruel: Shoving Montague Into The Vanishing Cabinet

On this occasion, the twins proved why Gryffindor wasn’t the chivalrous house that many think it to be. That’s because they thought it was funny to shove Montague — who was part of Umbridge’s Inquisitorial squad — into the Vanishing Cabinet and leave him there.

What’s more, it turned out that Montague almost died since the cabinet was actually a passageway, and only managed to survive by apparating out of there. The twins still thought this was funny despite almost killing a person. They also had no idea what a Vanishing Cabinet’s function was, meaning their joke was based on a whim with no care for consequences or safety.

5 Funny: Attempting To Lock Percy In A Tomb

Percy really could be insufferable due to his obsession with order and status. In Prisoner of Azkaban, he wouldn’t let his family hear the end of becoming Head Boy and kept rubbing it in the twins’ faces when they were in Egypt.

In response, George and Fred attempted to lock Percy in one of the tombs they visited to shut him up but were caught by Mrs. Weasley. This was a mostly harmless prank since it’s obvious the twins wouldn’t just leave their own brother in a tomb and would have gotten him out after they’d had their laugh.

4 Cruel: Almost Making The Unbreakable Vow With Ron

Ron revealed one of Fred and George’s earliest jokes when Harry correctly deduced Snape had made the Unbreakable Vow. As it happened, the twins had attempted to get Ron to complete a vow, with George being the facilitator and Fred making the vow with Ron.

They figured it would be funny to get their younger brother to agree to this, despite the fact that the twins themselves were only seven years old at the time and Ron was only five. As expected, Mr. Weasley was incensed when he caught them and the twins learned never to take their jokes to such extreme lengths.

3 Funny: Throwing Mashed Parsnips At Percy

By Half-Blood Prince, Percy had fully become wrapped in life around the Ministry of Magic, to the point where he pretended to want to meet his mother just so that Rufus Scrimgeour could have a meeting with Harry. The twins saw through this act and decided to prank Percy.

They did so by enchanting their food to fling itself at their brother, whose glasses became blotched and caused him to storm out. This not only got the siblings a good laugh but also gave what Percy deserved for taking advantage of his mother’s love.

2 Cruel: Turning Ron’s Teddy Bear Into A Spider

Harry Potter 5 Of Fred And Georges Jokes That Were Cruel (& 5 That Were Funny)

Fred was always the crueler of the twins, with his jokes being darker in nature. He was the reason for Ron’s arachnophobia, as Ron revealed that Fred had turned his teddy bear into a spider when Ron was just three years old.

The five-year-old Fred obviously didn’t have control of his magical powers at the time, but it’s clear he did intend to get a laugh out of his younger brother, and bewitching his toy did amuse him. Since this scarred Ron for life, it was far more sinister than it was funny.

1 Funny: Their Repeated Pranks On Umbridge

It’s no secret that Dolores Umbridge was the worst DADA teacher the school ever had, although she then became the worst Headmaster after Dumbledore was forcibly removed. This gave Fred and George the motivation to up the ante with their pranks to make Umbridge’s life miserable.

They took to handing out Nosebleed Nougats to students, casting portable swamps around the school so Umbridge constantly had to clean it up, and they even made a fireworks dragon chase her in the movie version of Order of the Phoenix. This gave the students of Hogwarts the only source of humor in what was the school’s darkest time.
