Albus Dumbledore was introduced in the Harry Potter series, where readers also witnessed his death in the sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Fans reunited with him years later in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, although with his younger self – so, how old is he in Fantastic Beasts and when he dies in Harry Potter? Albus Dumbledore made his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where he left baby Harry Potter with his uncle and aunt, the Dursleys. Once Harry started attending Hogwarts, he immediately bonded with Dumbledore, who served as his mentor through his school years.

Dumbledore did what he could to keep Harry safe in Hogwarts, especially after Voldemort and the Death Eaters rose again, and was on a hunt to find and destroy all of Voldemort’s horcruxes. Dumbledore was also the only wizard that Voldemort feared, so the dark wizard had to come up with a plan to defeat him and take the Elder Wand, which would have granted him greater power. Voldemort ordered Draco Malfoy to kill Dumbledore, which he knew from the beginning, but never did anything to stop him nor did he expel him in order to protect him from Voldemort. Draco was unable to kill him, so Snape did it, though it was all part of a plan between him and Dumbledore.

The Harry Potter series takes place between 1991 and 1998 (with the epilogue set in 2017), and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is set in 1997. Dumbledore had a long life, witnessed many conflicts in the Wizarding World, and lived through many tragedies. His official birth year is listed as 1881, meaning he was 116 years old when he was killed. Readers and viewers learned one part of Dumbledore’s life through the Harry Potter series, and while some details about his past were briefly mentioned, there was still a lot to learn about one of the greatest wizards to ever live. Luckily, the Fantastic Beasts films brought him back, and as these films are set before the events in Harry Potter, viewers have now met a younger Dumbledore.

The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, is set in 1926, but Dumbledore is just mentioned in it and doesn’t make a proper appearance. Viewers met young Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where he was a professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Fantastic Beasts 2 is set in 1927, so this version of Dumbledore is 46 years-old. The film made a big reveal about Dumbledore’s family background, as it turns out that Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) is not a long-lost member of the Lestrange family but of the Dumbledores, and his real identity is that of Aurelius Dumbledore.

Wizards have a longer lifespan than muggles thanks to their magical nature and abilities to heal faster, among other aspects, which is why Dumbledore had a long and interesting life, one full of adventures but also tragedies that made him into the great wizard he’s remembered as. Dumbledore is expected to return in Fantastic Beasts 3, which will hopefully expand his backstory a bit more, allowing viewers to learn more about all the battles and events he witnessed and experienced.
