The Harry Potter franchise is getting yet another mobile game; this time in the form of Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, a match three puzzler. Zynga has just announced that pre-registration for Android users is now live, and anyone who installs the game within the first week of launch will earn a bunch of exclusive in-game rewards.
It’s not clear what exactly these ‘Welcome Bundle’ rewards are going to be, but Zynga promises they will consist of various power-ups that will help players through the early stages of gameplay. It will also include a custom item that can be used to outfit players’ in-game character and identify ‘themselves as true fans of the Wizarding World.’
The game will reference material directly from the original books and films, and Zynga hopes that it will be “delighting fans with the memorable characters, sounds and story” that they’ve come to love over the years. Puzzles & Spells will include the original movie’s soundtrack, voice recordings from the films, and a narrative that involves iconic characters such as Hagrid, Dumbledore, and the Sorting Hat.
Beyond the pure nostalgia factor — which is probably the main selling point of the game — Puzzles & Spells is looking to add a bit more depth to the often-shallow gameplay seen in match three mobile games. Players will earn experience points as they progress, allowing them to learn new spells that help them solve some of the more challenging puzzles. Users will also be able to compete against each other using something dubbed the ‘Clubs feature.’ The early gameplay certainly looks promising, and we’re curious to see how the company can take advantage of the popular IP.
Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells does not yet have a release date but will eventually launch as a free-to-play title on both iOS and Android. It will also be playable on your Amazon Kindle or through Facebook, if you’re so inclined.
