Working at Hogwarts isn’t for the faint-hearted. Not only are the majority of subjects in the Harry Potter universe fraught with danger, but there’s also the very real possibility of the school being attacked by Death Eaters or other outside threats. And that’s not to mention mischievous students armed with the latest products from Zonko’s Joke Shop.

It’s abundantly clear that bravery is a vital quality for professors at Hogwarts and there were clearly some teachers that stood out from the crowd when it came to this.

10 Madame Hooch

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Quidditch is a seriously dangerous sport. Barely a match goes by without at least one student suffering a serious injury, so spare a thought for the poor referee tasked with keeping everything under control. But not only did Madame Hooch keep everyone in line, but she also refereed the games straight down the middle. She also had to deal with the perils of teaching students how to ride a broom. For every natural like Harry Potter, there are a dozen Neville Longbottoms. Madame Hooch was still a member of staff during the Deathly Hallows Part II, but her lack of screen time makes it impossible to evaluate just how brave she was during the Battle of Hogwarts.

9 Professor Sprout

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

In some ways, it is hard to assess Professor Sprout’s bravery levels as she is a largely peripheral character for the majority of the films, but she really came into her own during the Battle Of Hogwarts. Along with the other remaining teachers, she helped protect Hogwarts from Lord Voldemort and his army. Her use of mandrakes and snargaluff pods was extremely useful in thwarting the Dark Lord. Sprout is also seen helping students injured in battle and it seems highly likely that she was responsible for the plants that can be seen attacking giants at the start of the battle. Rewind six years and Professor Sprout was a key part of the mission to protect the Philosopher’s Stone. And it would certainly require a healthy dose of bravery to fill a room with Devil’s Snare.

8 Professor Flitwick

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Filius Flitwick was one of the bravest professors in the Hogwarts staff room. It’s one thing dealing with students catching fire during lessons and having to sit next to Snape in the Great Hall, but Flitwick’s bravery was highlighted whenever Hogwarts came under threat. He was one of the few teachers to stand up to Dolores Umbridge during her reign of terror, he successfully disarmed Professor Snape before the Battle of Hogwarts and he even outdueled both Yaxley and Dolohov during the final battle. With a little more screen time and dialogue, Professor Flitwick would undoubtedly have displayed even higher levels of bravery.

7 Horace Slughorn

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Horace Slughorn plays a pivotal role in the final three films of the series. He was not without his faults (teaching Tom Riddle about Horcruxes was probably not his wisest move), but Slughorn had an uplifting journey of redemption that concluded with him performing heroically at the Battle of Hogwarts. Slughorn can be seen casting protective charms, helping wounded students, and even taking care of an injured Filch. By the end of the battle, Slughorn’s redemption is completed and he can be seen regaling his fellow teachers with tales of his dueling exploits. If he had not been introduced so late into the series, Slughorn could possibly have laid claim to begin the bravest of all Hogwarts professors.

6 Mad-Eye Moody

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Mad-Eye Moody never taught at Hogwarts due to Barty Crouch kidnapping him before the start of term, but Dumbledore did appoint him as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, so technically he was a member of staff, even if he didn’t do any teaching. As for his bravery credentials, as a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Moody was involved in the battle at the Ministry of Magic and was always at the forefront of attempts to protect Harry. That loyalty was the cause of his demise, as his attempts to create a diversion during the flight from the Dursleys led to Voldermort unleashing a killing curse on him. Unfortunately for Moody, over half of his screentime was when Crouch was impersonating him and he spent the majority of the Goblet of Fire imprisoned.

5 Remus Lupin

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Another key member of the Order who met his end before the final credits rolled. Remus Lupin was a wise and respected professor, but his time teaching at Hogwarts was limited to just one year, but after leaving his post Lupin showed his true colors when he fought at the Ministry of Magic and the wedding of Bill and Fleur.

Ultimately, Lupin was a victim during the final Battle of Hogwarts, and the shot of him lying beside his also deceased wife Tonks is one of the most heartbreaking in the series. Like Moody, he suffered from a lack of screentime whilst in the Order, but there was no denying his remarkable bravery.

4 Professor McGonagall

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Minerva McGonagall’s bravery was evident throughout the series. Whether it’s admonishing disruptive pupils and teachers, dealing with the latest Hogwarts crisis, or protecting the school from Voldemort, McGonagall is never found wanting. Perhaps her bravest actions were during the Deathly Hallows films when despite Hogwarts being taken over by Voldemort, she remained in position and even helped Dumbledore’s Army secretly meet. She eventually played a huge part in the Battle of Hogwarts by dueling with Snape, Voldemort, and many of the Death Eaters. She even stood up to Voldemort when the Dark Lord entered the school during the lull in the battle. But despite that incredible bravery, there were still three professors who produced even braver acts during the series.

3 Rubeus Hagrid

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

Teaching Care of Magical Creatures is arguably the most dangerous job at Hogwarts. One false move and you could end up being attacked by a deadly creature. But whilst Hagrid successfully managed this treacherous role (notwithstanding the occasional injury to a pupil) his bravest acts occurred elsewhere.

Hagrid was Dumbledore’s ‘go-to man’ for dangerous missions, he survived a spell in Azkaban and he fought courageously in the final battle, but probably the bravest act Hagrid carried out was carrying Harry’s body back into Hogwarts after his assumed death. A gut-wrenching moment that truly highlighted just how courageous Hagrid was.

2 Albus Dumbledore

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hogwarts Professors

He may not be number one, but that’s taking nothing away from Dumbledore’s incredible bravery and courage. Dumbledore always stood up for his beliefs, even if that meant going against the Ministry, his fellow teachers, and even Harry Potter. Not only that, but he never shied away from putting himself in countless perilous situations – at the battle at the Ministry of Magic, it was Dumbledore who arrived to duel with Voldemort and ultimately save the day. But perhaps Dumbledore’s bravest act came in the Half-Blood Prince, when, despite knowing that his death was imminent, he worked tirelessly to help Harry and even accompanied him on a life-threatening quest to destroy a Horcrux. Dumbledore even bravely kept Snape’s cover when the undercover teacher was forced to kill him. Talking of which…

1 Severus Snape

‘The bravest man I’ve ever known.’ If anybody is qualified to judge the bravery of others, it’s Harry Potter. So his assessment of Severus Snape at the end of Deathly Hallows II means the Potions Master takes the number one spot. The startling revelation that Snape was a double agent means that all of Snape’s interactions with Voldemort and the Death Eaters have to be viewed from an entirely different perspective, and doing so reveals him to be an extraordinarily brave man. Snape’s cover was so deep that he was forced to commit the ultimate crime and kill Albus Dumbledore. Luckily, despite being on the brink of death thanks to Nagini, Snape managed to pass his memories on to Harry Potter, so that the wizard could learn the real truth about the Potions Master. So congratulations to Severus Snape, truly the bravest and most courageous professor Hogwarts has ever known.
