While the characters in Harry Potter might be the main reason why so many fans love the series so much, the magic and all of the fantastic places in the series also contribute. Fans of all ages have imagined what it would be like to be a witch or wizard and live in the wizarding world, but not all of the characters from the book series have magical abodes.

In fact, some of the dwellings in the series are very mundane and boring and a few are even really gloomy. But, along with these not-so-exciting places to live, the series also has some homes that fans would love to visit if they got the chance.

11 Number 4 Privet Drive

For the most part, the Dursley’s residence is pretty standard and run of the mill. And, it wasn’t a bad house by any means. However, the problem with No. 4 wasn’t really the house itself, it was the people living in it.

This home wasn’t a great place for Harry growing up, especially because he was forced to live in a small cupboard under the stairs throughout his childhood. And, compared to the magical locations, Privet Drive just isn’t cool.

10 The Gaunt House

Of all the depressing places that fans see or read about in the movies and books, the home of Marvolo Gaunt, and his children Merope and Morfin, is one of the saddest.

They were some of the most bigoted kinds of pure-blooded families, and while they came from wealth, the family line had squandered it years before. They lived in poor conditions, and they were also hateful people. No one would want to visit this place.

9 The Riddle House

One interesting thing about many of the homes fans see in the series is that they tend to belong to dark witches and wizards. This is likely because most of the book takes place at Hogwarts, so the only reason to see scenes in other locations is usually to give context to what Voldemort and the Death Eaters are doing.

The Riddle House is higher up on this list than many of the other locations because it is a fancy house that is quite expensive, so it isn’t as average as a place like Privet Drive. While the Riddles themselves weren’t the greatest.

8 Malfoy Manor

Malfoy Manor isn’t a really a nice place either and given that it’s often used as a base of operations for the Death Eaters, so most people wouldn’t want to hang out here.

However, from a history of magic perspective, the manor would be interesting to investigate. It’s been in the Malfoy family for a long time, and it’s large and decadent. There are likely many secrets there, but most of these secrets probably wouldn’t be nice to learn about. However, the peacocks at the entrance are a nice touch.

7 Number 12, Grimmauld Place

Grimmauld Place is another abode that was occupied by a pretty terrible pureblood family, but fans would like to visit because of the significance it has in the story and to the Order of the Phoenix.

There are many fascinating scenes of the Weasleys, Hermione, and Harry clearing out strange and sometimes dark magical artifacts. While Grimmauld Place definitely isn’t a pleasant place to be, there are things to learn about magic and history there.

6 James and Lily’s place

While most of the homes on this list so far were either dark or depressing, the last half of this list is all the dwellings fans would want to visit. Of course, the Potters’ home does get destroyed, but if it was possible to go back in time, it would be great to visit. Godric’s Hollow as a small village was inhabited by many witches and wizards, so it would be interesting to see this in action.

Also, while fans don’t know that many details about James and Lily’s home specifically, knowing them, it would have been homey and comfortable and filled with nice magical touches.

5 The Lovegood House

Luna’s home was one of the most unique in the series, adding to the idea that many witches and wizards live in houses that might seem odd to Muggles.

It was basically a small rook tower. Living in a cylindrical house is definitely a fascinating way to go. There’s no denying that it would be fascinating to explore the curiosities and artifacts in the home. However, many of the things collected by Xenophilius Lovegood were dangerous, too, so an abundance of caution would be necessary.

4 Shell Cottage

Shell Cottage is a place that doesn’t quite match many of the other locations in the series. Instead of being in the city or countryside, it’s next to the sea.

It’s a rather secluded place that is almost a getaway from the world, and the views of the water seemed spectacular. It’s also decorated with many beautiful shells, and it seems like a great place to go if someone needs to get away from the world and destress.

3 Hagrid’s Hut

While Hagrid’s Hut might be small, there’s something so cozy about it. Hagrid might not be doing a lot of magic, but he often brings in magical creatures that would be fascinating to see and interact with.

And, while fans probably wouldn’t want to try his homemade cooking, it is nice that he tries to provide others with food as well as a safe place to hang out and get advice. Hagrid’s hut is one of the main abodes in the series, and it holds a special place in many fans’ hearts.

2 The Burrow

If there’s any home that fans want to visit, it’s the Burrow. The Burrow is really like the home Harry never had, and it’s a happy, bustling, and magical place.

There are gnomes in the garden and a magical clock, and there are always spells being done and people talking and laughing. While it might not be a fancy house, it’s unique and an interesting mix-up of rooms and staircases. It sounds almost like a playhouse or treehouse, and fans wish they could visit.

1 Hogwarts

While Hogwarts is technically a school, it also functions as a living space and home for so many characters. While most people don’t live there permanently, the students and professors spend the majority of their time there. And, for characters like Sirius and Harry, it becomes the haven they never had in their childhood homes.

Of all the places people live in the series, it’s the most magical of them all. From moving staircases to the Room of Requirement, Hogwarts is just really cool.
