The Marauders are a group of characters from Harry Potter that many fans love. Even though there isn’t all that much attention given to their young lives, save for a few flashbacks, fans can’t get enough of Sirius, James, Lupin, and also Lily, and many still want to get more stories that center around these characters.

While the Marauders, except for Peter Pettigrew, were all members of the original Order of the Phoenix and mostly good people who tried to do the right thing, they also had their flaws. Each of them made their own mistakes, and often these choices had serious consequences.

10 Lupin going along with James and Sirius

James and Sirius were the ringleaders of the group, and they both were rather reckless and impulsive. Lupin was much more studious and serious, and he knew that James and Sirius were often out of control. However, he never really tried to stop them and was just happy to be a part of their group.

While Sirius and James are also responsible for their own actions, it seems that Lupin clearly knew better.

9 Sirius going to the Ministry to save Harry

When Harry and his friends go to the Department of Mysteries, they think that Sirius is being held by Voldemort. However, this is all a lie and was a vision made up to deceive Harry.

Naturally, as Harry’s godfather, Sirius wants to go with the rest of the Order of the Phoenix to save Harry and the others from Voldemort and the Death Eaters, but by making this decision, he ends up dying at Bellatrix’s hand.

8 Taking bullying Snape too far

While it’s easy to assume that the Marauders were bullies and Snape was innocent, it’s not entirely true. Snape also antagonized them, and he was into dark magic in a way that should make any good person uncomfortable. However, James and Sirius took things way too far when they humiliated him in front of other students in a way that was very harassing.

This was just the wrong thing to do, and it also helped create the horrible relationship between them and Snape.

7 Sirius abusing Kreacher

While Sirius even tells Harry that you can tell who a person is by how they treat those with lesser social status than them, he goes back on this himself by being cruel to Kreacher. Given that Kreacher parrots the bigoted beliefs Sirius hated, it makes sense he wouldn’t want to be around him. But, Kreacher was also very much a victim.

By being so cruel to him, Kreacher learned how to get around the rules to spread information to Bellatrix and Narcissa.

6 Lupin refusing to say anything about seeing Pettigrew

When Lupin got the Marauders’ Map from Harry to protect it from falling into Snape’s hands, he did spend time looking over the map and noticed Peter Pettigrew on there. Even though he knew the map was telling the truth most likely, he didn’t do anything about it.

He should have investigated further or taken this information to Dumbledore, but instead, he let his guilt stop him. If he had made a different choice, Pettigrew might never have been able to escape and find Voldemort.

5 When Lupin tried to leave a pregnant Tonks behind

While Lupin is usually the more level-headed and gentle Marauder, he really makes a bad choice when he tries to leave a pregnant Tonks behind to go with Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

He was letting his own guilt get the best of him but abandoning his wife and unborn child in that situation is rather reprehensible. This choice definitely changed how Harry viewed Lupin.

4 When Sirius tried to break into Hogwarts

After spending 13 years in Azkaban, it makes sense that Sirius wouldn’t be in his right mind. But, the way he tries to break into Hogwarts makes him look guilty. He destroys the Fat Lady portrait and scares Ron with a knife. Then, when he grabs Ron to get Scabbers, he breaks his leg.

While Sirius might have thought he was doing the right thing trying to kill Pettigrew himself, and maybe he didn’t have many other options, he shouldn’t have put innocent students at risk by being so reckless.

3 Sirius trying to get Snape killed

While there were other instances of James and Sirius taking things too far, Sirius went way off the rails when he told Snape how to get into the Whomping Willow while knowing that Lupin was waiting in his werewolf form.

Not only could Snape have died, but this also would have left Lupin facing that guilt and even more discrimination. This decision also created a horrible rift between Snape and Sirius.

2 Making Pettigrew the Secret Keeper

When James and Lily went into hiding using the Fidelius Charm, Sirius was going to be their Secret Keeper as James’ best friend and their most trusted confidante.

However, Sirius was worried that he might be targeted by Voldemort and believed that Pettigrew would be the safer choice to protect the Potters. While Sirius never meant for anything to happen, and the blame lies with Pettigrew, this choice still had dire consequences.

1 Everything that Pettigrew did

While most of this list has been about the other three Marauders, Peter Pettigrew technically was one of them. However, he did so many awful things that this list would have been only about him otherwise. But, since he betrayed them all and became a cruel, spineless servant of Voldemort, he gets the top spot on this list. It’s because of him that James and Lily died, and he also killed Cedric Diggory.

He was definitely one of the more evil and disgusting characters in the series.
