Harry Potter: Why Fans Want A Snape Prequel Series

Severus Snape is one of the most controversial characters in Harry Potter – should an HBO series expand his history?

Fans have been speculating about a possible plot for a new Harry Potter series since rumors started flying that HBO Max might be revisiting the Wizarding World with a new TV show – but as of yet, there is no confirmation on the show itself, let alone what the plot might be. However, prequel series are definitely high on the possibility list (failure of Fantastic Beasts notwithstanding, of course).

There is a wealth of pre-Harry history to play with, of course, but many fans are hoping that a new series wouldn’t go too far back in time. Instead, it might do well to look at the earlier years of characters who are established as adults in the original franchise – and whose pasts hold a certain amount of mystery… after all this time.

10 Lily Evans

While Harry Potter’s father, James, is a more controversial figure in Harry Potter mythology (or an ‘arrogant toerag’, according to Snape himself), Lily Evans seems to be universally beloved.

Teachers, other students, and of course, Snape himself adored her – and it would be nice to see a little more (and a little more depth) to this hugely important figure. A Snape prequel series would, of course, focus on Lily as well.

9 More Insight Into Muggle/Wizard Interaction

In the original Harry Potter movies, the bulk of what is shown of how muggles deal with wizards is through the Durselys, who knew about magic to begin with, and hated it with a passion. It would be fascinating to see more of Snape’s family, and to get some insight into how a muggle and a witch would connect and marry (especially when the muggle world and the wizarding world are kept so very separate in the series, for the most part). There are a lot of questions about this, and about wizards living among muggles, that a Snape series could answer.

8 Getting To See Another Side of Hogwarts

Fans have a soft spot for Hogwarts, with most wishing that they, too, could have gone to study at this magical school! However, it’s easy to feel that way when all the main characters have an amazing time there – the Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione are all either extremely popular, extremely talented, or on the Quidditch team (or all of the above). Snape still adored Hogwarts, because he hated his home life, but it would be interesting to experience Hogwarts from the perspective of more of an outsider, not one who immediately fits in.

7 More Focus On The Details Of Magic (Especially Potions)

While the original movies are ostensibly about learning magic, most of the main characters are either naturally talented (Harry and his corporeal patronus), uninterested (Ron), or study obsessively to succeed at absolutely everything (Hermione).

A Snape story would be an interesting look at a student’s natural aptitudes, and especially at potion-making, which seems like one of the more interesting branches of magic. Fred and George prove that creating spells is possible, and Snape definitely made some of his own (like Sectumsempra), but the original movies don’t go into too much detail about magical talent and how spells are actually developed – which would be a great angle for a Snape story to take.

6 Young Marauders

Many fans are gunning for a story about the Mauraders themselves, but seeing them in a Snape story would be equally interesting. It may even be more interesting, to see James, Remus, Sirius, and Peter at their worst, when they were bullies in school. Flipping the story on its head, but still showing the Mauraders could make for an interesting twist.

5 A History Of The Death Eaters

For most of the original movie, the Death Eaters are pretty straightforward villains, and there isn’t much time devoted to exploring why some wizards would end up going down such an evil path. Telling Snape’s side of the story (given that he was, indeed, a Death Eater) would provide insight into the group, early Voldemort, and how they came to power. It wouldn’t be a pleasant tale, but it would be a fascinating one.

4 A Period Piece

Severus was born in 1960, meaning that his story at Hogwarts would start in the ’70s, and his time with the Death Eaters and into the First Wizarding War would stretch to the ’80s.

This means that a Snape prequel would be a period piece, and would include ample opportunity for amazing fashion choices, pop culture references, and other elements that could make this even more popular.

3 Stays In The Familiar Hogwarts

Snape’s story is inextricably linked to Hogwarts – not just his time there as a student, but after that, when he returns as a Professor. Which means, of course, that a Snape prequel would have to take place largely at the wizarding school (but with the ability to spend a little more time in Hogsmeade, home for the holidays, and out in the world with the Death Eaters). This may not make for a wildly original story, but the familiar setting is always going to be a hit with fans.

2 It’s Time For A Slytherin Story

At this point in the franchise, fans have seen a Gryffindor story (in the original movies), and a Hufflepuff story (in Fantastic Beasts) on the big screen. A Slytherin story has been told in The Cursed Child (as both Albus and Scorpius are in Slytherin) but it’s not quite the same as a screen adventure – and given that Slytherin gets unfairly treated as the ‘evil’ house in much of the franchise, they deserve a couple of chances to redeem their reputation! (As long as Ravenclaw is the focus of whatever comes next!).

1 A Fan-Favorite Character

Snape is a controversial figure – some fans believe that he was a miserable, obsessive man who bullied his students and deserves no forgiveness. Others, however, see him as a romantic hero, a complex man who suffered, changed sides, and eventually did all he could to protect Harry and his friends. The truth is something of both – but no matter what, he is one of the most talked-about characters in the franchise, and one whose very controversial nature and complex character deserves more screen time to explore it.
