Hawaii Five-O season 6 episode “Malama Ka Po’e” gave fan favorite supporting character Lou Grover his very own episode. Hawaii Five-O is a reboot of the classic cop show that debuted in 1968 and ran for 12 seasons. The 2010 take on the concept centers on a police task force based in Hawaii, which is fronted by Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan). Characters Chin (Daniel Dae Kim, Lost) and Kono (Grace Park) also played major roles on the show until both actors departed following the seventh season.

The Hawaii Five-O reboot is on track to match the number of seasons reached by the original series, as it started airing its tenth season in late 2019. There had also been an attempt to bring it back in the 1990s with actor Gary Busey starring but it never made it past the pilot stage. Whereas other buddy cop shows like Lethal Weapon quickly burned out after a few seasons, Hawaii Five-O’s mixture of banter and action has proven a very successful formula.

Hawaii Five-O is also set in the surprisingly sprawling NCIS universe, which includes other series like JAG and Scorpion. The show also features a rich group of supporting players, including Jorge Garcia’s Jerry Ortega, who recently departed the series. Another fan favorite is Chi McBride’s Lou Grover, the former captain of Honolulu’s SWAT team. Grover was introduced during season 4 but while he and McGarrett used to loathe each other, they’ve become good friends over the course of the following seasons.

Hawaii Five-O season 6 episode “Malama Ka Po’e” gave McGarrett and Dano a chance to relax by centering on Grover and his family. Lou, his wife, and two kids are forced to go on the run when an old foe from Grover’s past comes seeking revenge. McGarrett and the team try to track him down while assassins chase the Grover clan, and the episode is a good showcase for McBride, who tries to keep his family calm and safe amid some close calls and tense gunfights.

Of course, the drama is wrapped up fairly neatly by the end of the episode, but “Malama Ka Po’e” is unique in its focus on Lou Grover and his family instead of the main team, with “Danno” completely absent from the action. Lou Grover has always been one of Hawaii Five-O’s most interesting supporting characters and McBride’s performance in the episode was a good reminder of why.
