Kate Bishop is set to make her MCU debut in the upcoming Hawkeye Disney+ series later this year. While fans of the screen franchise are likely unfamiliar with the younger version of Hawkeye, comic fans know she is one of the more important figures in the Marvel Universe in the last fifteen years.

Kate Bishop has strong ties not just to Clint Barton in the comics, but also the Young Avengers, a group of teen superheroes who have played a big role in major comic events in the last decade. Her future seems bright in the MCU and looking back at her comic book history will give fans an idea of where she’s headed.

10 One Of The Founding Members Of The Young Avengers

Kate Bishop debuted in Young Avengers #1 in 2005. At this point, she is a civilian without superpowers. She witnesses the team battling in New York City and basically invites herself onto the squad. She joins the team as they battle the time-traveling super villain Kang The Conqueror.

This issue launches one of Kang’s most important comic book arcs since Iron Lad, the leader of the team, is a variant of Kang. Iron Lad eventually leaves the team to fulfill his destiny to become the supervillain while Kate sticks around as Hawkeye and remains part of the team for several years.

9 “Hawkingbird”

Kate Bishop calls herself Hawkeye early on in the Young Avengers run, but she gets tagged with a lot of nicknames. One of the best is “Hawkingbird.” The name comes about in Young Avengers #6 because her first costume adopts the purple color of Hawkeye’s classic looks but also the distinctive domino mask of his wife and colleague Mockingbird. The nickname comes courtesy of her teammate Patriot, Eli, the grandson of Isiah Bradley, one of the most important versions of Captain America, who would later become one of Kate’s romantic interests.

8 The Third Hawkeye

Kate Bishop is actually the third character in Marvel Comics to adopt the name Hawkeye. The first was Clint Barton, and the second was Wyatt McDonald, one of the most powerful members of the Squadron Supreme.

Kate takes the name in honor of Clint Barton, who at that point had died in the Avengers Disassembled storyline. He sacrificed his life when the Scarlet Witch conjured a Kree invasion of New York City in her grief and anger over the loss of her children. The Scarlet Witch eventually resurrects the archer in the House of M storyline but Kate keeps the name that she established her superhero career with.

7 Romance With Patriot

The Patriot’s gentle tease of Kate with the Hawkingbird name was part of their cycle of flirting and fighting in the early runs of the Young Avengers series. The two generated sparks from the very beginning, but it was a fitful romance that had a lot of peaks and valleys over the years and ultimately never really blossomed.

The two struggled to articulate their feelings to each other off and on, but during the Siege storyline where Loki invaded Asgard, the two shared a passionate kiss. It’s possible this romance plays out in the MCU as Eli was introduced in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier.

6 Confronting Captain America

Kate’s role as Hawkeye takes a strange turn when she confronts a resurrected Clint Barton over his use of the name and costume of Captain America in the epic Civil War comic book event.

She doesn’t know that it’s Clint in the costume when she first chastises him for impersonating Steve Rogers, who at this point had been assassinated. Barton is apprehending unregistered superheroes in the guise of Captain America but her condemnation makes him realize the error of his ways and he puts down the shield.

5 The Secret Invasion Of The Skrulls

Given her role in the Secret Invasion comic book event, it’s possible that Kate Bishop is a character who appears in the MCU series. Her role is likely to be small as Kate and the Young Avengers were relatively minor players.

The junior Avengers team helped fight the Skrull invasion in New York City but were overwhelmed by the sheer force and numbers of the Skrulls. It’s too early to speculate, but this event could be what brings together the Young Avengers in the MCU, as most of the players will be in place by the time the series debuts on Disney+ in 2022.

4 Teaming Up With Clint Barton

The MCU Disney+ Hawkeye series seems to be taking a lot of cues from the 2011 Hawkeye solo series by writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja. In that series, Kate and Clint team up for the first time to take on crime in New York City. Clint teaches Kate everything he knows about being an archer and a hero and she helps take on the Russian mob, among other villains.

The street-level take on the characters was a critical success, nominated for the 2014 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series, and also included the “Pizza Dog” story from issue #11, in which Lucky, Clint’s dog, is the point of view character.

3 Leader Of The West Coast Avengers

Like Clint Barton before her, Kate Bishop leads a version of the West Coast Avengers. Clint reforms the team in 2018 after a series of shark attacks on land in California, leading ultimately to a confrontation with former West Coast Avenger Tigra. Kate eventually assumes the mantle of leadership for the group, which finances their operations by being filmed as the stars of a reality television show.

The team includes a number of other young heroes including Gwenpool, Kid Omega, and Fuse. The roster eventually expands to include Jeff the Land Shark, a baby fish that became the team’s unofficial mascot. The team quickly disbanded and Kate pursued her solo adventures once again.

2 Miles Morales’ Girlfriend

Like just about every other character in Marvel Comics, Kate Bishop has versions in alternate realities. One of the most significant is in the Ultimate Comics universe, where Kate was the girlfriend of Miles Morales, Spider-Man from Earth-1610.

This Kate is very much different from the Earth-616 version, as she and her family are all members of HYDRA. Miles confesses his secret identity to her, which leads to him being captured by HYDRA. Their relationship hits the rocks after that, despite her genuine feelings for him.

1 ‘Taskmistress’

Another nickname that Kate Bishop earned in Young Avengers #6 was “Taskmistress,” which is a play on the Black Widow supervillain Taskmaster. Kate earns the name in part because of her photographic memory and ability to pick up things lightning quick, which is similar to the Taskmaster.

She also was using a number of weapons styled after Avengers armaments like Hawkeye’s bow, Mockingbird’s battle staves, and a sword modeled after that of the Swordsman. The Taskmaster also uses weapons derived from the Avengers’ arsenal, and frequently bedeviled the superteam with his fighting prowess.
