Hawkeye Episode 5 Directors Tease What To Expect

Hawkeye directing duo Bert and Bertie tease what to expect in the next episode. Hawkeye is the latest entry in the MCU, released between Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and tells the story of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) teaming up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to confront enemies from his past as Ronin while trying to make it home to his family in time for Christmas. The series has featured Hawkeye encountering a number of threats from the comics, including the Track Suit Mafia, Maya Lopez (aka Echo), Jack Duquesne (aka Swordsman), and, most recently, Yelena Belova from Black Widow.

Unlike previous MCU series WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, which was overseen by one director for all the episodes, Hawkeye has multiple directors with episodes 1, 2, and 6 being directed by Rhys Thomas while episodes 3, 4, and 5 are helmed by British directing duo of Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood who are credited as Bert and Bertie. The duo had one feature film to their credit before, the 2019 film Troop Zero, as well as some episodes of Kidding and The Great before landing the gig for Hawkeye. In the two episodes that have been released that they directed, major changes have happened for Clint and Kate, and it appears more changes are to come.

Speaking with Screen Rant in an exclusive interview, Bert and Bertie teased what to expect in the fifth episode of the series, which will air on December 15, 2021, on Disney+. The duo teased that audiences won’t be disappointed with what is to come. They also hinted at a shift in the tone of the series in the future episode but didn’t indicate what that tone would be. The duo said:

Bert: You won’t be disappointed.

Bertie: I don’t think we can be specific. But we can say that you never know where the show is going to go, whether that be with characters, or discoveries, but also with tone. You might be settling into a certain tone, and then suddenly, you’re in a very different tone. So that’s one of the things we find so exciting about the show.

A recent report from an industry insider teased that Hawkeye episode 5 will blow up the internet, hinting at some interesting developments for the series. It has been rumored for some time that Vincent D’Onofrio would be reprising his role as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, from the Netflix Daredevil series in Hawkeye as Maya Lopez’s unseen uncle. Given the fact that Hawkeye episode 5 will air the day before early screenings of Spider-Man: No Way Home take place and that film is rumored to feature Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, it would be perfect timing and one way for the two projects to build hype off one another.

The tease of a change in tone could also be a major hint at what is to come, possibly shifting the point of view from the series from the lead characters to a supporting player, like Lucky the Pizza Dog. Matt Fraction and David Aja Hawkeye’s comic run featured an issue entirely told from Lucky’s point of view and an episode like that would be both unexpected for an entry in the MCU as well as traditional event television series. An episode of Hawkeye focused on the lovable animal sidekick would likely generate a passionate positive response similar to how Baby Yoda’s cute appearance on The Mandalorian made it a cultural phenomenon. Still, odds are that the series is gearing up for something major in episode 5.
