Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is setting up Clint Barton to copy Iron Man’s tragic ending. The archer has been having a rough time getting back in the saddle in Hawkeye, Marvel’s latest Disney+ series. To be sure, Clint’s got a lot on his hands and has been more weary since the Blip and Black Widow’s death in Avengers: Endgame.

In Hawkeye, Clint is currently facing down the wrath of Maya Lopez, the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia who wants revenge on Ronin — the moniker Clint took up during the Blip — for killing her father. In addition to working with an inexperienced partner, Kate Bishop, Hawkeye must also contend with Yelena Bolova, who is out for her own slice of vengeance in the wake of sister Natasha Romanoff’s death in Avengers: Endgame. With so much going on, Clint is struggling to get back to his family in time for Christmas as the odds keep being stacked against him.

All this seems to be putting him on the same path as Tony Stark, with Hawkeye potentially leading Clint toward a tragic ending, especially since Hawkeye’s journey heavily parallels that of Iron Man’s. Even when he tried to retire, Tony was drawn back into the superhero world in some capacity. Five years after the Blip, Tony was living a good life and he finally had the family he wanted. And yet, he was pulled back in (on more than one occasion) to the fight. The same is happening with Hawkeye, who is no longer interested in being an Avenger and hasn’t for a long time. Natasha’s death and the loss of his family during the Blip weigh heavily on him and he’s tired of it all. Despite having his wife and kids back following the Avengers’ efforts in Endgame, Hawkeye can’t seem to detangle himself from the world he left behind.

The loss weighs heavily on Clint even though his family is alive once more. With Hawkeye seemingly following the same journey as Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series is positing that the superhero life is always calling and the sacrifices — no matter how they benefit the greater good — are simply too much to bear. So while Clint has certain parts of his life back in place, it’s not the same and the cost is perhaps too much. His past continues to haunt him and it’s possible he will sacrifice himself to save Kate Bishop, who is being set up to take over his mantle by Hawkeye’s end.

Clint’s story doesn’t have to end in tragedy at all, of course, but it looks to be headed that way, especially since Hawkeye has yet to advance Clint’s story beyond trying to mend his past mistakes and the hurt he still feels over Black Widow’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. Hawkeye is over being an Avenger; whenever someone brings it up, he winces or smiles politely, but halfheartedly. True retirement and happiness elude him as it did Iron Man, so it seems likely Clint’s arc — which is filled with a whole lot of regret in Hawkeye — could end in the same way.

New episodes of Hawkeye air weekly on Disney+.
