Warning: Contains spoilers for episode 5 of Hawkeye.

Disney+’s Hawkeye episode 5 makes Black Widow’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame even sadder. Natasha’s character arc in the film was already sad by itself, and the revelations about her past in Black Widow made it even worse. Hawkeye adds more to that, and the revelations keep her arc on the same track of its downward spiral.

Hawkeye episode 5, “Ronin”, opens with a flashback of Natasha’s sister, Yelena, working to free a brainwashed Widow. After that was taken care of, Yelena is suddenly turned to dust for a second before rematerializing, revealing that she was a victim of the Blip alongside half of all life in the universe. Yelena immediately asks about Natasha, and while the episode doesn’t show the story she was given, anyone watching would know that she would eventually learn that Natasha is dead.

What happened to Yelena makes Natasha’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame even more tragic in retrospect. While it was a popular theory that Natasha’s family were victims of the Blip to explain their absence, this is the first time the theory is explicitly confirmed, at least in regards to Yelena. Either way, the fact that Yelena was dead adds even more weight to her arc and eventual sacrifice.

Hawkeye episode 5’s reveal means that Natasha telling Steve that her family is gone didn’t just mean her found family in the Avengers, but her actual sister whom she only just reunited and reconnected with in Black Widow. Natasha spent over twenty years denying the idea that there was anything real to her and Yelena’s family and accepting that she would never get them back, and just when both ideas were reversed, the events of Avengers: Infinity War took her sister away from her. With that taken into account, it makes sense that Natasha would be so distraught over the Blip and why she was so invested in fixing things with the time heist.

The reveal also informs the audience of what was going on in Natasha’s head when she made her sacrifice on Vormir. While Natasha obviously did it because she, like Clint, was willing to sacrifice herself if it meant bringing everyone back, it’s now easy enough to conclude that her wanting to bring Florence Pugh’s Yelena back also factored into her decision. Suffering a personal loss likely affected Natasha to an incredible degree, and her willingness to get back the family she only just saw revived might have evolved to her simply wanting Yelena to come back, even if it meant that she couldn’t be with her to make it happen.

In conclusion, Hawkeye’s revelation of Yelena being a victim of the Blip serves to make Natasha’s sacrifice even more tragic in hindsight. Avengers: Endgame did a lot to show how deeply the Blip had affected her, but the idea that Natasha was dealing with personal loss, and was willing to sacrifice herself to remedy it, makes the entire situation even worse. It adds a great deal of tragedy to Black Widow’s sacrifice, but at the same time, it adds a great deal of heart to it that brilliantly plays off of what previous installments had done with her.
