Warning! Spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of Marvel’s Hawkeye

Marvel’s new Hawkeye series has now made the comics’ origin of Clint Barton (Jeremey Renner) impossible in the MCU due to its introduction of the Swordsman (Tony Dalton). Also known as Jack Duquesne, the Swordsman is featured as the new fiancé of Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) the mother of Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). As a result, Duquesne’s role in the comics and his connection to Hawkeye’s past no longer make sense for the MCU.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Clint Barton learned how to use a bow and arrow after running away to join the circus, becoming an expert archer thanks to the tutelage of Trick Shot, one of the circus’ many performers. He also learned how to use a sword from Jacques Duquesne, the Swordsman. However, Clint would eventually discover that Jacques was stealing funds from the carnival, creating animosity between the former mentor and student before the Swordsman fled. As the Marvel timeline continued, Jacques would lead a complicated life with a constantly shifting morality. While some periods saw him as a criminal, others featured him eventually joining the Avengers (albeit temporarily). However, his MCU role looks to be quite different in Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Now that “Jack” Duquesne is being featured in the present-day MCU during Hawkeye, it seems doubtful that he trained Clint in the past seeing as how they both to around the same age. Furthermore, it looks as though the new series on Disney+ has elected to connect Jack much more to future Hawkeye Kate Bishop. While this does confirm that Clint’s origins and early years in the MCU must be different than what’s been seen in the comics, Duquesne’s presence is still a dynamic choice by Marvel Studios given his connection to the character. The first two episodes also strongly suggest that he is indeed a villain, having stolen Clint’s sword from his time as Ronin which was being sold at a black-market auction.

As the first two episodes of Marvel’s Hawkeye revealed, Kate is already quite suspicious of her mother’s new fiancé, especially after Jack’s uncle was murdered by a sword (following the auction). As such, it seems as though Duquesne is being set up to be one of the series’ main villains (rather than as a new hero). Either way, it seems doubtful that he’ll have any kind of prior personal connection to Clint Barton as the series goes on.

All things considered, the fact that Clint Barton’s complete comics origins can’t be told in the MCU isn’t all that detrimental in the grand scheme, especially if the trade-off is the Swordsman getting to be featured as a dynamic villain for Clint and Kate to potentially face in future episodes. In any case, Hawkeye’s present and future as Clint struggles with his legacy are arguably far more interesting than his comic-book past as the new MCU series continues. As a result, Hawkeye could yet represent an exciting evolution for the character.
