Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. Hearthstone has announced that the game’s new Mercenaries mode will allow players to go on PvE bounty missions starting October 12. Mercenaries is Hearthstone’s latest game mode and was first introduced during BlizzCon 2021, and it’s yet another take on the CCG that eliminates deck-building. Instead, players will gather parties of six characters and go on adventures, collecting experience and rewards along the way.

Blizzard also recently announced United in Stormwind, Hearthstone’s latest expansion, which takes players to the Alliance capital. This is a follow-up to the Horde-focused Forged in the Barrens that came before it. The Hearthstone Core set of cards and Classic Mode were also released earlier this year, with each focusing on making the game more accessible for new and returning players. These major updates and the upcoming Mercenaries mode have come as part of Hearthstone’s Year of the Gryphon, which has been very content-heavy so far.

In a recent stream, the Hearthstone team revealed more information about the previously announced Mercenaries mode. Coming on October 12, this is an RPG-inspired version of the game in which players will gather a roster of iconic heroes to level up and adventure with. After building teams of six champions, players will be able to either step into the fighting pit to face off against others in PvP battles or go on PvE adventures in the Bounties mode. The latter is a roguelike experience involving a journey through a unique randomly generated map featuring six encounters. Successfully navigating these and defeating the enemies they meet along the way will clear the path to the final boss, who is the bounty target.

The core gameplay of Hearthstone Mercenaries is turn-based combat like League of Legends’ evolving Teamfight Tactics. Initially, players will select three characters to place on the board. These can be either Fighters, Casters, or Protectors. Each of these plays a distinct role in terms of stats and abilities, with each type having an advantage over one of the others. As such, players will have to strategize in a scenario similar to rock-paper-scissors. After a set-up round in which players select what abilities to use and who to attack, the champions on the board will execute these actions simultaneously. Aside from the three main types, characters can also be grouped by minion type or spell schools. This creates synergies between users of the same magic or thematically similar heroes and allows for greater firepower.

Mercenaries is the game’s second mode to employ auto-battling mechanics, with the first having been the recently overhauled Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Although Mercenaries might share some similar features, it also appears to include a lot of microtransactions, causing some concern among the playerbase as to whether the game mode will be expensive to participate in. While it is still too early to say if Mercenaries will be successful, Hearthstone is continuing to evolve after seven years, so adjusting to player spending and feedback is something that could happen with Mercenaries down the line.
