He-Man and Skeletor come together and dance in a piece of Masters of the Universe fan art inspired by the Patrick Swayze classic Dirty Dancing. The artwork pays tribute to the ’80s Mattel-owned franchise and the 1987 romance film starring Swayze and Jennifer Grey. He-Man and Skeletor recently returned to the small screen in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which released its second part on November 23.

He-Man and Skeletor are characters who have remained icons of pop culture long after they were first introduced to the world as characters from Mattel’s toyline that hit shelves in 1982. Together the pair have battled across multiple pieces of media, such as the 1983 Filmation TV series, multiple comics series, memes, and the 1987 live-action film. 2021 alone has seen He-Man return two separate series with Netflix’s CGI family-oriented Masters of the Universe, and the more adult-oriented Masters of the Universe: Revelations helmed by Kevin Smith. With Smith teasing possible Revelations season 2 characters, the He-Man franchise continues its prominence in pop culture and has now had an unlikely crossover with another ’80s icon through a piece of fan art.

Created by artist Butcher Billy on Instagram, the artwork features He-Man holding his mortal enemy, Skeletor, in a recreation of the poses taken by Johnny Castle (Swayze) and Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman (Grey) on the album cover of the 1987 film’s soundtrack. The logo and tagline, “The Time of Your Life,” are placed beside the pair to further the tribute, while an explicit content warning sits in the lower right corner. He-Man and Skeletor’s designs are heavily inspired by the 1983 cartoon rather than the newer Netflix incarnations, to solidify the artwork’s ’80s inspirations. Though it is certainly the last crossover anyone would expect, it’s not the first time the two have been mixed, as a 2017 ad campaign saw He-Man and Skeletor dance to “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” in routine inspired by the film. The live-action commercial saw He-Man track Skeletor to a bar, only to kickstart the jukebox with a shock from his power sword and dance with his foe. The commercial for British price-comparison website MoneySupermarket was preceded by another that saw Skeletor dance through the streets to Irene Cara’s “Fame,” with He-Man making a brief appearance in the end.

While it’s an unusual combination, Butcher Billy’s Masters of the Universe fan art is a fun tribute to the ’80s. Taking He-Man and Skeletor’s now-classic designs and placing them in this situation will not only catch fans’ eyes, but those of people who came to know the series through memes like the Heyyeyaaeyaaaeyaeyaa music video as well. Though fans may also wonder which other ’80s icons can have similar crossovers.
