Henry Cavill shares his thoughts on a potential film or TV adaptation of Warhammer40,000. After appearing in lesser-known roles, Cavill shot to global stardom when he was cast as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Alongside his work in the DC Extended Universe, Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s fantasy epic The Witcher.

Cavill has recently been doing the media rounds to promote The Witcher season 2, which will see Geralt and Ciri’s journey unfold following their coming together at the end of season 1. The actor appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya. He discussed working on The Witcher season 2 but also shed some light on one of his favorite hobbies. Cavill described how he enjoys assembling, painting, and playing with Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 table-top figures, to the interest of Norton and the other guests. Holland seemed particularly eager to learn more, and Cavill jokingly agreed to help Holland get started.

Now, Empire reports Cavill is interested in a film or TV adaptation based on stories from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The franchise is rich in lore, with many book series, games, and codexes adding to the official canon. Cavill said he would want to see this depth respected in any potential film or TV adaptation, stating that the IP “needs to be handled to a Lord of the Rings level.” The actor went on to say, “if it’s not, I’ll be massively disappointed.” Cavill was also asked if he’d like to play Eisenhorn if the opportunity presented itself:

I mean, I don’t know about Eisenhorn necessarily, when you’ve got Valdor and Primarchs out there. It seems a shame to be a mere Inquisitor. But I would absolutely leap at that opportunity — it’s something I’d be very, very excited to do.

Cavill went on to discuss his love of Warhammer fantasy, calling out Sigmar in particular. The actor said in part:

The Sigmar storyline is fantastic!. I haven’t played Age Of Sigmar, haven’t got into that, but the books written about Sigmar were brilliant. So there’s a potential for a storyline there as well. There is so much stuff and that world is so rich, and that universe is so exciting. That is the true dream job opportunity. If I were to have the opportunity to show that as live action then I would be ecstatic!

It’s exciting to hear Cavill is interested in getting involved in another beloved franchise. He recently confirmed he would be interested in taking up a role in an adaption of the Mass Effect games after teasing his potential involvement earlier this year. The prospect of a Warhammer 40,000 adaptation is good news for those who have long been impressed by Cavill’s knowledge of lore and love of the hobby. While Warhammer 40,000 is popular across the world, the infamous Dungeons & Dragons film from 2000 showed doing a live-action adaptation of a tabletop game isn’t always easy, even with a ready-made fanbase.

Those who enjoy Warhammer 40,000 will hope that if an on-screen adaptation of the universe’s stories is ever made, any involvement from Cavill will indicate a stamp of quality. The actor’s comments make it sound like being a part of any live-action project would be a no-brainer, so now it’s on Games Workshop to put together a compelling and lore-accurate script. Players will have to wait and see whether or not the company does decide to push Warhammer 40,000 onto the big screen but will surely be hoping that, if it does, Cavill can get involved and fulfill a genuine ambition.
