During Joseph R. Biden’s swearing-in as the 46th President of the United States, Jennifer Lopez sang “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful” and slipped in some Spanish – what did it say? During the singing of “America the Beautiful,” in which she was accompanied by the United States Marines Band, Lopez said “Una nacion, bajo Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos,” which translates to “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” It’s the last line of the Pledge of Allegiance and by speaking it in Spanish, Jennifer Lopez sent a message of inclusion: Liberty and justice and the principles of our democracy are for all, not a few. She couldn’t resist sliding in a “Let’s get loud!” a moment after, a nod to her own song of the same name. But taken in the context of what she’d just said in Spanish, it could also be read as a message to immigrants and Latinx people that it’s time for their voices to be heard.
Despite the songs and the speeches and a beautiful poem by National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, the swearing-in of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President was a more somber affair than usual. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic necessitated far fewer people being present than is normal, with the National Mall, typically packed with people for an inauguration, instead being filled with 200,000 U.S., state, and territory flags to represent the people who couldn’t be there for the inauguration. The heavy presence of the National Guard surrounding the Capitol building, which has been turned into a “green zone” in the weeks since the January 6th insurrection, was also a jarring sight.
Still, the inauguration went off without any disruptions or attacks, and on the TV screen, with entertainers like Jennifer Lopez singing patriotic songs, it gave the appearance of normalcy and business as usual. A little more normalcy will be restored during the special presentation event tonight, for which both President Joseph R. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are scheduled to speak.
