Heres Why Pokemon Sleep and Sinnoh Are Trending on Twitter

When The Pokemon Company announced that another special Pokemon event would happen shortly after the previous, fans’ expectations climbed very fast. After all, the Pokemon event last week saw the announcement of three new Pokemon games including a Pokemon Snap sequel. Now the latest event is over and Pokemon is trending on Twitter again, but not for the reasons fans may have been hoping for. “Pokemon Sleep” and “Sinnoh” are the two trending terms, and neither because of a related announcement.

Pokemon Sleep is a game from The Pokemon Company announced mid-2019 that helps players track their sleep schedule. The game isn’t out yet and hasn’t been talked about since. Pokemon Sleep wasn’t mentioned today, either. At least, it wasn’t mentioned by The Pokemon Company. Rather, Twitter users were making fun of today’s Pokemon event being boring by saying that this is what Pokemon Sleep’s gameplay must be like.

To be fair, not everyone on Twitter was making fun of the stream and Pokemon Sleep. Some were genuinely hoping to see the game again. Of course, Twitter users begging to see more of Pokemon Sleep over what was actually shown during the event is kind of an insult, too.

As for Sinnoh, it’s a similar situation to the well-intentioned Pokemon Sleep Twitter posters. Sinnoh is a region within the Pokemon world and serves as the setting for Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Pokemon fans on Twitter had built their hopes up for a possible remake of Diamond and Pearl, a Switch version of the games akin to The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening’s remake. That didn’t happen, filling the Sinnoh trend with sad fans.

The general frustration that fans had is how heavily The Pokemon Company seems to be prioritizing mobile games over bigger console experiences. Core Pokemon fans tend to want games like the main series of Pokemon titles. The Pokemon Company clearly sees more benefit in expanding into smaller, better monetized Pokemon experiences while maintaining the current biennial Pokemon main series release schedule. Frustrations are bound to happen.

That said, what The Pokemon did announce during today’s event is still very interesting. Pokemon Unite is a 5v5 multiplayer game that looks an awful lot like a MOBA. It’ll be free-to-start and can be played on both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. It may not be a Pokemon Diamond or Pearl remake, and it may not be Pokemon Sleep either, but it’s certainly an interesting game to look forward to.

Pokemon Unite is releasing on Switch and mobile devices.
