On May 25, Chikorita started trending on Twitter with the grass type Pokemon being included in nearly 8,000 posts at the time of this writing. Pokemon fans from all over the platform came together to argue their opinions on the second generation starter.

A Pokemon trainer’s challenge to be the best like no one ever was starts when they pick the Pokemon to begin their adventure with. This creates a nostalgic bond between players and the first Pokemon that they traveled the various regions with. Others love certain starter types for their good stats, expansive movepools, or the strong typing of their evolutions. Whatever their reasoning, Pokemon fans tend to have strong opinions about which starter Pokemon are — or are not — good. Chikorita is one of these Pokemon.

On May 25, Chikorita started trending on Twitter after streamer TitoKMF asked the question of who the worst Pokemon starter was. Chikorita became a frequent mention in that thread, and soon many others on the platform began jumping to the Leaf Pokemon’s defense. Many users brought up the grass starter’s average stats or weaker movepool, while others rallied behind fond memories of traveling through Johto with the second generation Pokemon, the starting Pokemon’s personality, or its cute appearance.

The attention to Chikorita attracted other Twitter users, who took advantage of the time it was trending to post fun GIFs and images of the grass type. TitoKMF did not specifically say anything about Chikorita in his original tweet and only asked about the Pokemon starters as a whole.

There is no way to say one Pokemon is worse than another in these arguments on Twitter, as each person may have come to their conclusions through different avenues of thinking. Some may argue that Chikorita’s stats may not measure up to other starters’, while the second generation grass type starter may be the perfect Pokemon for a person’s Little Cup competitive team. Everyone has different aspects that they’re holding up against Pokemon to determine which are better than others. Unless everyone agrees to look at Chikorita using the same criteria, it will only be someone’s personal opinion whether or not Chikorita is the worst starting Pokemon.
