The Batman, the latest retelling of the Dark Knight’s story, has been in cinemas for more than a week and is getting praise the world over. Some might argue that there have been too many Batman movies at this point, and in a sense, they might be right. Others would argue that there has been nothing quite like this, and those who have seen Robert Pattinson’s first outing as Gotham’s brooding hero have been trying to decide where it ranks alongside other Batman flicks.

The consensus appears to be that The Batman definitely ranks top three overall, but Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight might still be number one. Unless you ask Hideo Kojima who has a take on the Batman movies you probably haven’t seen over the course of the past week and half. Actually, it’s probably a take you’ve never seen ever.

“This is my favorite Batman movie,” Kojima tweeted, attaching the Japanese poster for The Lego Batman Movie. That’s right, even after seeing The Batman, presumably at some point over the weekend based on the flurry of tweets about it, Kojima’s favorite Batman movie is still the Lego one. Better than Batman Begins, better than Michael Keaton’s outing in 1989, perhaps even better than Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker if that counts as a Batman movie.

While it would have been amusing if Kojima refused to elaborate on his controversial pick for best Batman movie, the Death Stranding director has gone into great detail about why Lego Batman is the best Batman. “In order to create a hero, you need villains. Good and evil, light and dark can be vague, but heroes and villains need to appear as a pair … The Lego Batman Movie is a masterpiece that dares to step into this tacit understanding,” Kojima explained in a series of tweets.

Kojima isn’t just a genius when it comes to creating great video games, he’s also a big movie buff. His Twitter bio states that he is 70% movies, something that really comes across in his work. Now, if Kojima is as serious about his love for Lego Batman as he claims to be, then there had better be an homage to it in his next game, no matter how out of place it might feel.
