If you’ve been a little wary of VR gaming in the past, perhaps this impressive showcase might be enough to get you excited about the whole idea. HITMAN 3 in PlayStation VR is going to be one heck of an experience.
Whether you’re a staunch advocate or a real doubter, there’s no denying that VR gaming has incredible potential. Or that it hasn’t even come close to realizing much of it yet. Much as the DS’s newfangled touchscreen gimmick was a real curveball back in 2004 (touchable screens! What will they think of next?), there’s so much that the virtual reality concept has to prove to get the wider gaming community on board.
The issue with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and the like is that the pricepoint for the high-end tech involved is just too… well, high-end for many consumers. Couple this with the lack of truly essential titles that necessitate VR, and it’s understandable that things haven’t quite taken off yet.
This isn’t to say that VR hasn’t gained a following in the industry, as there are some great games that use the tech on the PlayStation VR and beyond. The upcoming HITMAN 3 is going to feature a VR mode, as we know, and it just might be the most impressive use of the tech yet. In the newest showcase for the game (on the official HITMAN YouTube channel) titled VR: Become the Hitman, the developers give a glimpse at the wonderful, engrossing, grisly new world of VR assassination:
“The first time I put the headset on, immediately, we knew that, okay, we’re onto something quite spectacular here,” states Senior Game Designer Eskil Mohl. Clearly, he’s not kidding.
The concept of being inside a typical HITMAN situation as Agent 47 himself, hearing every insignificant snippet of conversation at a cocktail party while trying to track your target, is just mind-boggling. Every firefight, every swing of a melee weapon, will truly be enhanced by this tech.
It’s all super exciting and brimming with promise, as though the team holds the future of VR gaming in the palm of their hands. If they pull it off, they just might be the devs to sell the average gamer on the concept.
If that weren’t enough, there’s one more interesting snippet of information you’ll want to know: as we’ve reported previously, the entirety of the first two games in the trilogy will be available in HITMAN 3 too (free to those who own the games already) and both of them will also be given the VR treatment! The title’s set to launch next January for all current-gen and next-gen consoles (except Nintendo Switch, unsurprisingly) and PC.
