Home Alone Reboot Trailer Shows Why It Cant Beat The Originals

The Home Alone franchise is finally returning with Home Sweet Home Alone, but the film’s trailer has already revealed why it won’t be as good as the original. The original Home Alone is a Christmas classic, and Home Alone 2 is also held in pretty high regard by many, but every Home Alone movie since has received severely negative criticism. While the 2021 Home Alone reboot looks like it’s doing a lot of things right, there’s one major issue that it, unfortunately, can’t fix.

When Home Alone was first released in theaters in 1990, it wasn’t exactly a critical darling. Even today, the original Home Alone holds just a 66 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes – barely enough o keep it in the “Fresh” category. It’s a simple and silly premise for a Christmas movie that relies heavily on lowbrow humor, but it worked. It worked well enough to gross close to $500 million on an $18 million budget, establishing itself as part of the pantheon of contemporary Christmas movie classics.

What made Home Alone work so well despite its flaws and inconsistencies? Most people will say the answer is, simply, Macaulay Culkin. His performance as Kevin McCallister is outstanding, and unfortunately, it’s something the Home Alone reboot can’t recreate. Archie Yates (Jojo Rabbit), who’s playing new protagonist Max Mercer in Home Sweet Home Alone, is an incredibly talented young actor. The rest of the cast is also packed with great comedians like Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney. But without the irreplaceable x-factor of Culkin, no Home Alone movie can truly compare to the original.

There were a lot of problems with Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, and Home Alone: The Holiday Heist. They all lacked in various creative aspects. However, they also all lacked Kevin McCallister. Home Sweet Home Alone has a good chance of being the best entry in the franchise since the departure of Culkin from Home Alone, and the trailer shows good moments for Yates, Kemper, Delaney, and the rest of the cast. But the Home Alone reboot trailer doesn’t have that indefinable energy that Culkin brought to the original film. It’s fun and colorful, but it feels mostly like a respectable retread – something that will pay homage to, but never replace, the original Home Alone. Perhaps that’s all the movie could have hoped to be.

It’s possible that Home Sweet Home Alone exceeds expectations and rises to the heights of the original, but that seems unlikely. The trailer shows a fun family film with a number of nice references and a talented cast, which hopefully will be enough to entertain this Christmas season. It might finally be time, however, to admit that Home Alone doesn’t just need talent. It doesn’t just need a good script and a compelling lead. Culkin wasn’t outstanding as Home Alone’s Kevin McCallister because of his acting skills – he was simply the perfect person for the role. So, while the Home Alone reboot may deliver a fun new entry in the franchise, it likely won’t be able to reach the heights of the original.
