Sony has just unveiled its new PlayStation VR2 headset, and announced a new VR game from Guerrilla and Firesprite, Horizon Call of the Mountain. We barely know anything about the game at the moment, all we have is a very short teaser trailer.

Guerrilla studio director Jan-Bart van Beek said in a YouTube video, that while all of the Horizon team had been hard at work finishing Forbidden West, they were also working on a “unique, new Horizon experience. One that has been built, from the ground up, for PlayStation’s next-gen VR hardware.”

He continues, “It’s been designed to push gameplay, technology, and hardware innovation […] allowing you to interact and feel immersed in the world of Horizon in a whole new way.” The PS VR2 headset will feature a 4K HDR 110-degree field of view, with OLED display, eye tracking, 3D audio, and vibrations, while the controllers will utilise haptic feedback.

The actual trailer for Horizon Call of the Mountain starts at around 1:20, and shows a new character talking to the game’s protagonist while she sits in a boat. A PlayStation Blog post reveals, “this story will be told through the eyes of an entirely new character. You will also meet Aloy, other familiar faces, and new characters along the way, and we’ll be introducing you to the protagonist of Horizon Call of the Mountain soon,” so try to be patient.

The footage in the trailer shows an on-rails boat ride, where the pair look up at a Tallneck that walks over the stream carrying their boat. The unnamed man says, “it’s heading towards Thorin’s Grasp,” a location not mentioned in Horizon Zero Dawn.

We don’t yet have a release date for either the PS VR2 or Horizon Call to the Mountain, but as both have been shown simultaneously, the new game will likely be available as a launch title in order to entice people to buy the new VR system. If you want to try out the original game in VR, someone’s made a mod for that.

It’s a good time to be a Horizon fan. There’s a podcast that offers deep dives into the world and design of the game, Forbidden West just over a month away, and now a new VR game to look forward to.
