Horizon Forbidden West is the sequel to the beloved Horizon Zero Dawn, but the story took a turn that many were likely not expecting. From an outcast of the Nora to dealing with larger-than-life threats, Aloy could have never expected what she would be up against.

There will, of course, be spoilers for the story of Horizon Forbidden West as we explore what happened at the end of the game, and the potential for another game in the future.

What Happened At The End Of Forbidden West?

Horizon Forbidden Wests Ending Explained

Aloy and her companions take the fight to the Far Zenith base for the final battle. Using the secret entrance revealed by Tilda, and the shield-distorting weaponry developed by Sylens, the group is able to infiltrate the base and bring the fight to the Zeniths up close.

With Beta on the inside, she follows Aloy’s instruction to infect the machine-printing facilities at the base with Hephaestus. This means that an army of machines is created immediately and brings war to the Specters protecting the base.

After a battle against Erik, Aloy is able to defeat him. Zo finishes him off with a spear to the back, and Aloy is able to continue up to the top of the Far Zenith base – this is where Beta is being held.

Once at the top, she speaks with Beta and they both investigate the terminal in the room. They soon learn that the Far Zeniths are not actually taking over Earth, but are instead stopping to grab GAIA before continuing their escape – an escape from an entity known as “Nemesis”.

As it turns out, Nemesis is an AI made up of the collective consciousness of Zeniths who wished to live in their perfect reality for eternity. However, the AI festered and broke from its confines on the Zenith home, and began wiping out the Zeniths in its hate for humanity.

Nemesis is also what sent the signal to wake Hades, causing the events of the first game and leading GAIA to create Aloy and destroy herself shortly after.

The Zenith survivors ran from Nemesis and headed to Earth to grab GAIA, so that they could continue running and make their perfect world once Nemesis had stopped following them.

After Aloy and Beta have learned of Nemesis, Gerard and Tilda enter the room – Tilda quickly kills Gerard, before speaking to Aloy and Beta. She recalls her love for Elisabet, and tells Aloy that she is the best version of her, and that she will not lose her again.

Tilda demands Aloy join her escape from Earth and leave Nemesis to wipe out the planet as they escape with GAIA. Aloy refuses, and Tilda becomes hostile, attacking Aloy with her advanced mech – Specter Prime.

Aloy defeats Tilda, and Sylens enters – who has known of Nemesis and the coming threat for quite some time. He plans to board the Zenith ship and leave Earth behind, and asks Aloy to come along too. She refuses, and Sylens begins to board the ship.

The rest of Aloy’s companions arrive, and they celebrate the victory over the Zeniths, though the biggest threat is to come. When Sylens sees the group celebrating and knows what is yet to come, he decides to stay “for the time being”.

After this, Aloy knows that they must prepare for the coming threat – Nemesis is headed to Earth and will stop at nothing to wipe out humanity, as it did on the Far Zenith’s home. Her companions head out to ask for help from allies, and this is where the plot ends.

What Happened To Hephaestus?

Horizon Forbidden Wests Ending Explained

Hephaestus was used to infect the machine-printing facilities of the Far Zenith base, which was necessary to win the battle. However, this means that Hephaestus was no longer contained and is once again free.

We can expect that Hephaestus has returned to the Cauldrons across the country and will continue to infect and produce hunter-killer machines. With a potentially increased anger, the machines yet to come may be the deadliest yet.

As such, GAIA is without Hephaestus, and can only continue to maintain the biosphere for a few months extra. Combined with the fact that Nemesis is headed to Earth, the group needs to figure out a solution quickly to put a stop to Nemesis, and how to maintain the survival of the Earth.

Will There Be Another Horizon Game?

With the plot being left on the group asking for help against the next – and biggest yet – threat to Earth, we can expect another Horizon game to pick up where Forbidden West left off.

Nemesis is out to wipe out all life on Earth, and will arrive soon. There is no idea what to expect when it arrives, as it is unlike anything Aloy or Earth has faced before. A rogue AI made up of collective minds fueled by nothing but hate. Whether we’ll get to venture into space as part of the next game remains yet to be seen.

Not only this, but Hephaestus is free once more and will likely make the biggest and deadliest machines yet. We can only imagine what we will be up against in an upcoming game.

Nemesis is on the way and Hephaestus is back out in the world – there will be a lot to figure out, to say the least. While it may seem hopeless to have these larger-than-life threats pile up once more, Aloy will overcome them – only this time, she has a group of trusted companions to fight alongside her, and allies who will undoubtedly come to her aid in this ultimate fight.

Perhaps potential DLC for Forbidden West will expand on the upcoming threats or new allies who can help. After all, the Frozen Wilds DLC for Zero Dawn introduced Hephaestus – a major part of the sequel. With the success of the series and a new game expected to come, DLC is also very likely and may give us a peek into what threats we will face next.
