Fans of Horizon Zero Dawn should get ready to sync up their Focus and grab their trusty bow as the Zero Dawn world is returning to comics in a new series this summer. Promising a proper depiction of one of the most important events in its history, the legendary Liberation of Meridian from the wicked Sun-King Jiran, the series launches July 21. Horizon Zero Dawn: Liberation #1 will be scribed by the videogame writers Ben McCaw and Anne Toole with art by Elmer Damaso (Robotech) and follow the adventures of the irascible, hard-drinking – yet also loveable – warrior Erend as he and Aloy hunt a murderer in the midst of the events of the game.

Published by Titan Comics in conjunction with Guerilla Games, the Horizon Zero Dawn comic series expands on the tribal, machine-overrun world of the 31st Century, with the first 2020 four-issue series focusing on the character Talanah Khane Padish as she hunted vicious machines after the events of the 2017 game. Liberation will instead focus on Erend and his tumultuous life. A member of the Oseram tribe, Erend, along with his sister Ersa, were instrumental in overthrowing Jiran following his “Red Raids,” a campaign of slaughter against the outlying tribes that bordered Meridian in order to collect human sacrifices.

According to a press release from Titan Comics, the comic series will showcase the tremendous battle between the forces of Jiran and those of his son Prince Avad during “The Liberation,” a singular event precipitated in the aftermath of Jiran’s execution of his eldest son, Prince Kamadam, which eventually led to the Carja Civil War. This epic backdrop to the world of Horizon will be seen from the perspective of Erend as the good captain tells the story to Aloy while they embark on an excursion to catch a fugitive murderer. The first issue will feature a cover by Peach Momoko (X-Men Demon Days) and variants by Harvey Tolibao (Uncanny X-Men, Green Arrow), Ann Maulina (Raruurien) and Dave Wilkins (New Mutants, Savage Sword of Conan). The writing team behind Horizon Zero Dawn has gained much acclaim for their work in the experiential style of videogame storytelling, including the coveted Award for Achievement in Videogame Writing in 2018 from the Writers Guild of America. This new series, which will feature a deep dive into the lore of the game world, will precede a sequel game, Horizon Forbidden West, coming out sometime in 2021 which will continue the adventures of Aloy following her victory in The Battle of Alight, where she fought alongside Erend and the Oseram Vanguard in a desperate battle to save both Meridian and mankind.

Prepare for another hunt in the world of Horizon, because Horizon Zero Dawn: Liberation #1 is coming this summer.
