Updated December 10, 2021 by Gabrielle Huston: This guide has been updated with the various possible decisions you can make in this scene and their consequences in-game. Since House of Ashes is a complex game with hundreds of endings, we acknowledge that we will miss details in these walkthroughs. However, we strive to provide you with as much information as possible.
In The Temple
The prologue begins with a mood-setting shot of executed men’s heads, lined up on an altar, as well as the location and date: Akkad, 2231 BCE. Balathu, an Akkadian general, will be summoned by the king – interrupting his attempted execution of a man named Kurum.
After speaking with the guard who summoned him, Balathu enters the throne room, where the king is yelling at a young woman. When the king orders Balathu to kill her, the first decision arises: whether to follow orders or not?
- The woman resists and Balathu must kill her
- The woman resists and Balathu must kill her
- When the king dies later in this scene, Balathu will seem relieved about it and earn a positive relationship point with Kurum
- The woman resists and Balathu must kill her
- When the king dies later in this scene, Balathu will be surprised about it and consequently gain a negative relationship point with Kurum
After the woman has been dealt with, Balathu will join the army outside the temple as the Gutian army begins its assault. Inside, King Naram-Sin watches an eclipse occur. As the battle rages on, we slowly start to see the soldiers being overtaken by mysterious, unseen creatures. Balathu takes refuge inside the temple. He and Kurum (who has escaped his cell) must flee to safety.
There are several button prompts as Balathu flees the temple with Kurum.
Failing the button prompt to push open the door will cause Kurum to taunt Balathu, and earns negative relationship points between them.
There are no consequences for failing the other button prompts.
In The Tomb
Balathu leads Kurum into the catacombs beneath the temple, where the temple’s builders would be buried after they died. The first room is circular, with an inaccessible centre.
In this circular room, there are two objects to interact with.
The first is a tablet on the floor; it’s the first “Picture” to discover in the game and it prompts a premonition of an undead person pulling themselves out of a hole.
The second is a large, decorative stone with inscriptions and images carved into the face of it. The game prompts you to look around for secrets when you interact with it, but there is not any collectible or secret here; just the few carved pictures, depicting the events that the characters alluded to in previous conversations. Balathu may make a comment.
Facing The Creature
When Balathu and Kurum progress through the next door, they’ll have a conversation. If Balathu has enough negative points in his relationship with him, Kurum will be hostile when Balathu asks about his necklace. If Balathu has a positive relationship point with him, Kurum will be a little more forthcoming about it.
Balathu must make another decision, now, about whether he wants to work together with Kurum or not. If Balathu suggests the two of them might work together, he’ll earn a positive point towards your relationship, regardless of Kurum’s reaction.
If you had a positive relationship with Kurum at this point, you’ll sheath your sword and he will too. If you had a negative relationship, he’ll be aggressive and you’ll pull out your sword again.
Finally, Balathu and Kurum will be faced with the creature, standing side-by-side. Balathu can decide whether he wants to fight (with Kurum) or betray (Kurum).
If Balathu chooses to fight, one of two things can happen:
Or, if Balathu betrays him, he’ll run away and sacrifice Kurum for a few more moments of life.
